Happy Friday

I’m so excited today is Friday. Friday is my favorite day of the week (I’m pretty sure everyone else feels the same!), I only have one short class, the entire afternoon to myself and usually a nice dinner out and general college shenanigans at night. The word shenanigans makes me feel like an old man, but I’m rolling with it.

Tonight we have plans for a Thai dinner (so excited!) and Art Crawl. One of my roommate’s has artwork on display in a couple of galleries and I’m really excited to check them out. And get free wine. Priorities. My roommate has an art blog if you want to check out her work!

I got in a nice sweaty workout this afternoon which felt SO GOOD. I’m the worst injured person ever, I can’t deal with sitting still. I did this LiveFit workout. LiveFit workouts are my go-to for strength training because they work and I always feel like jelly afterwards. I’m weird and I really enjoy that feeling. I also did a 20 minute tabata workout on the exercise bike that looked like this:

tabata bike workout

I was sitting at one of the weight machines secretly hating all the people on treadmills because they were running and I couldn’t. Lack of exercises endorphins clearly makes me a grouch. So I decided to hop on the exercise bike and test out my calf/knee to see how it felt, and it felt pretty good so I pedaled my little heart out for 20 minutes. I was good and kept it to just 20 minutes. Progress people.

In addition to a great workout I also plopped myself in the coffee shop with a big mug of coffee and my laptop and got a ton of work done. Feels good. I eve made some fun social media buttons to the side bar. I’m trying to make things over on the blog slowly but surely.

And for something fun for your afternoon:

Things Group Fitness Instructors Say

Most of these are courtesy of Fit Expo

“Yoga block DOWN!”

“You know, when you’re ellipticizing really hard and the handle just ends up in your mouth!”

“I think I just backed over the yoga block”

“My iPod died because I sweated too hard”

“A day without burpees is like a day without sunshine”

I realize I still owe you guys a recap of Fit Expo, it’s coming! I promise!

Have you ever tried tabata workouts? I love them!

What are you doing this weekend?

Don’t forget to enter my giveaway, it closes tonight!!!

Friday Rambles

Guys, I’m seriously slacking on my Pilates posts, sorry about that! I promise to make up for it later. But in the mean time, I’m feeling some rambles, I couldn’t think of a cool alliteration for it so you are just stuck with Friday rambles. Get ready, I have the attention span of a 5 year old, actually they might have me beat.

  • I leave for South Carolina tomorrow! We’re spending the weekend there to have pre-Christmas with my grandfather, aunt and uncle. My boyfriend’s tagging along too because we’ve been dating for 6 years and he still hasn’t met my extended family, I hope he’s in for an all new level of crazy. Just kidding, my family’s not too bad. Sometimes…

    circa 2010

Two things about this picture, one, it is physically impossible for my family to take a picture where everyone’s eyes are open, seriously every single picture someone is blinking, two, my family makes me look like a shrimp. I promise I’m actually 5’4″ my family is just a bunch of super tall freaks.

  • I’m very upset at my gut right now for hating gluten. I just want to stuff my face with spritz cookies but nooooooooo. Boo.

    spritz1
You look so tasty yet you are so so mean to my tummy. Gluten-free substitute cookies just aren’t the same. You best believe I’m eating like 50 of these puppies Christmas morning, the day after Christmas is already super depressing so having a terrible stomach ache won’t make it much worse. That sounds a little terrible but it’s my plan.

  • Even though they’re not spritz cookies, I’ve had some pretty good gluten-free cookies lately, first these guys:

    almondcookies
Then I picked up some of these guys at the store:
    gluten free gingerbread cookies
Hit the gingerbread spot. They were light and fluffy, the texture was a little crumbly but I didn’t mind. Only 12 come in a box which is kinda lame, but probably a good thing because if I go crazy and eat the whole box I won’t feel too bad about it.

    And tonight I made these:

    pbblossoms
PEANUT BUTTER BLOSSOMS. I. Love. These. Cookies. Luckily gluten-free peanut butter cookies are super easy to make and all I had to do was add the Hershey’s kiss. Dark chocolate Hershey’s kiss of course.

For the cookie, I used this recipe from the Detoxinista, except I left out the salt because I was using salted peanut butter and I added 1/4 cup almond meal because my batter was looking pretty wet and I was scared it wouldn’t hold up the kiss. I found the Detoxinista’s blog through a google search and she has a ton of grain-free and flourless recipes that I’m super excited to try out soon! I love google blog finds!

  • One box, four cats

    1box4cats
They are all a bunch of crazy kids. Who needs a cat bed when you have an Amazon box?

  • I’ve had some really awesome workouts this week thanks to having no daytime obligations, I love break.
Friday: Yoga, I’m trying not to slack on the yoga since my 30 day yoga streak is over, but I definitely did during exams and my muscles were tightttt, but by the end of class they were all nice and loose-y goose-y
Saturday: Weightlifting, I’ve been feeling a little weak and squishy lately so I’m trying to get more strength training back into my routine, yay muscles!
Sunday: An Interval Training class at the gym, I haven’t been to one of these since the summer and I really enjoyed it! The class is 90/60/30 second intervals of cardio and strength training. I worked hard then went home and ate lots of Christmas cookies. It’s all about balance right?
Monday: Pilates! I love being able to go to classes outside of my University, it gives me lots of good ideas/cues for my classes. This instructor was so good and intense, my abs were feeling it! And I ran a 5k on the treadmill after class.
Tuesday: Another yoga class, I loved this particular teacher, her classes are very flowy and she always gives savasana adjustments which feel amazing!
Wednesday: 5.5 mile run! My longest run since May!
Thursday: 5k run with the running group at my gym and weights. Maybe not the best decision to run back to back days but my legs were feeling good and I don’t get many opportunities to run with other people so I jumped on the chance.
Today!: Yoga and more weights! My legs were tight after all that running!

That was a lot of words and not a lot of pictures, let me make up for that:

  • Lately I’ve been renewing my love for kale:

    kale1
    kale2
I was on a big spinach kick for a while because it’s easier to prepare, but I picked up a bag of kale at Trader Joe’s the other day which was a fantastic decision. I love my greens!

Are you traveling anywhere for Christmas?

What are your weekend plans?

Have you baked any Christmas cookies/goodies? I want details!

Yoga Challenge Recap and Weekly Workouts

I can’t believe Courtney‘s Yoga Challenge is over!

Sweet Tooth, Sweet Life

Even though I didn’t get in as many yoga practices as I was hoping, I still really enjoyed the challenge. Incorporating more yoga into my routine is something I’m always working on and I love a good challenge to encourage me. Thanks Courtney!

I had really good intentions of doing lots of yoga this week, but I’ll be honest, life got in the way. School was super busy and stressful this week and yoga just didn’t happen as much as I wanted. And even though yoga is a great stress reliever I was drawn to more intense cardio classes this weeks. Sometimes you just got to go with what you’re feeling.

Sunday: Sunday morning I did a Hip Opener podcast from Yoga Journal. This podcast was different from the Hip Opening sequence I did last week but still felt equally awesome. I’ve decided if I’m going to continue doing workouts that involve things like spin or plyo that I NEED to do hip openers. My hips are wayyy too tight otherwise. Plus I could always use a little more balance in my life.

Sunday night I taught a short 30-minute Pilates class for an Aerobathon (3 hours of exercise, yeahhhh) we were having on campus, and I ended up staying for a 30-minute yoga class afterwards. It just reminded me that I really need to work on making it out to more yoga classes. It’s been tough since they closed the gym where the yoga classes were help and they cut back on a lot of the yoga classes (and Pilates, it’s a lame situation) and they don’t fit into my schedule so well. But the yoga teachers we have on campus are fantastic and too good to just be college students (though most of them are legit and have their 200-hour certifications!).

Today: This morning I did an Arm Balance podcast also from Yoga Journal and it was a lot of fun. I want to work on arm balances more because they are lots of fun and so good for building strength. I just like pulling Stewart, “Look what I can do!”. MADTV reference anyone?

Even though the challenge is over I want to keep trying to incorporate more yoga into my life. I know I always say that and then completely fail at it, but I want to make a better effort this time! My body loves yoga and I need to start listening to it a little (okay a lot) better!

Yoga Challenge recaps: Week 1 | Week 2 | Week 3

Workouts:

I’ve also had some stellar workouts this week that I really want to share with you guys. I love talking workouts on here because for some reason my friends aren’t interested in talking about how many pushups or burpees I did today. I don’t understand why not.

The campus gym I usually go to closed (stupid construction) which has really shaken up my fitness routine and I haven’t had Pilates classes to teach (also thanks to the stupid construction) so I’ve been trying out lots of new classes. My muscles have been soorrrrreeee (in a good way!) all week. I kinda love it.

Sunday I had a meeting to go to with all the other campus group fitness teachers and we always have a workout before the meeting. This month’s workout was done by the personal trainers and it was a little weak, so I went running with a couple of the cardio teachers, which was really nice. We just did a 2.5 mile loop, but they were faster than me so it was a good challenge to keep up. I think I need to find people to run with more often because it was a nice change of pace. Sometimes the time alone while running is nice but I think it would be more motivating to have a running buddy. Too bad most of my friends don’t run.

Monday I went to a step class and my legs were absolutely dead by the end of it. I haven’t been to a step class in forever. It wasn’t my favorite class though, I have a step instructor at my gym at home who is like the queen of step and does some crazy choreography, so I’m a little spoiled.

Tuesday I hit up a 20-20-20 class taught by one of my favorite instructors, she is so sweet but she will work you to death in her classes. I did a full minute of burpees. It hurt. Lots. You Crossfit-ers and your 7 minutes of burpees are crazy. I think I almost drowned in my own sweat, in a good way, if that’s possible.

Someecards always manage to describe my life perfectly.

Wednesday I went to a Total Body Sculpt class, which isn’t a class I’ve been to before, but holy muscles on fire. We did exercises with lots of reps and my muscles were definitely feeling the burn. I tend to do high weight, low rep workouts so this was definitely a change of pace and my poor little muscles were begging for mercy.

Thursday I checked out a Power Abs class. I’m not really a big fan of abs classes, I think spending 30+ minute on crunches is completely pointless, but I was really antsy all day and it was the only class that fit in my schedule, so I figured I try it and give it a chance. I actually ended up liking the class. It wasn’t my favorite class ever, but the instructor incorporated a lot of cardio and back exercises to make the class a little more well rounded. Since the class was a shorter one I also did a couple shoulder exercises and a quick 2 mile run on the treadmill. I finally got to break in my new shoes!

I love them! I have been wearing them for cardio classes. My foot has been hurting a lot so I figured I needed to start wearing shoes that actually fit. My foot feel a million times better wearing these shoes. The fact that they are the best color ever (purple!) is just a bonus.

Friday: I got out of my 9:00 am class a little early so I went to a Strengthen and Tone class. I loved this class because it alternated between cardio, strength and circuit style exercises which really kept things interesting. By the end of class I felt like I had gotten an awesome workout. Always a great feeling.

Saturday: Saturday was supposed to be a rest day, but I ended up working on a farm for a couple hours in the afternoon. More on that later, it was a fun experience that deserves its own post.

Sunday: I taught a 30-minute Pilates class for an Aerobathon event we had on campus. I also took a 30-minute kickboxing, circuit and yoga class. Having that much variety in one workout is so much fun. It kept things interesting without leaving me completely exhausted!

Whew, this turned into a massive post. Thanks for hanging in there!

Tell me about your workouts this week!

So you remember the Stewart sketches from MADTV? Tell me I’m not the only one! Those sketches were hilarious!

What I Ate Wednesday

What’s up Wednesday?

It’s that time again!

I love the Halloween theme! I love pumpkins, like a lot. Moving on…

Breakfast

Oats in a Jar! Is it sad that I had this for breakfast yesterday morning and I already have another jar ready for tomorrow’s breakfast? Maybe. And Trader Joe’s makes better peanut butter than Smucker’s. Sorry Smucker’s.

Morning Snack

Baby carrots with peanut butter! Such a good snack. Just ignore the fact that all the black beans on my salad rolled over on to my carrots. They rolled back over before I ate the salad though, which was good.

I also had a teeny apple, so teeny it fit in the palm of my hand. I love mini foods. I also had some some cottage cheese with peanut butter and cinnamon. Sounds weird but it so good.

That’s one spooky looking snack. Everything about cottage cheese is so appetizing.

Lunch:

A sad, sad lunch but one yummy bar. They were on sale at Harris Teeter so I picked one up to try it out and it was quite yummy. But can anything with chocolate and almonds really be bad?

Afternoon Snack:

TRAIL MIX! Way too sugary but I didn’t pack enough snacks and I was hungry and the student union bulk trail mix was too convenient. Some candy corn might have snuck it’s way too. No shame. Candy corn is one of my favorite things, it’s a good thing it’s seasonal or I would be in a sugar coma 24/7.

Dinner:

Deja vu? Romaine lettuce, black beans and tomatoes from the Farmer’s Market! The tomatoes counted as my red food for the #plantPOWER October challenge, which is turning out to be a really fun challenge. Thanks to Heather and Kasey for such a fun challenge.

I also had some roasted vegetables at 9:30 when I got back from campus. Got get my veggies in before bed time!

And I made a T-Shirt! Hand screen  Epsilon Pi Tau is the technology honors society, nerd alert.

I ate a whole lot more, but I didn’t take pictures so I kinda forgot what I ate. Sorry guys it’s been a long day. Let’s talk about workouts instead, I remember those and it’s been a really good week for workouts so far.

Monday I did a yoga podcast in the morning, it was fantastic, I need more yoga in my life! After class I went to a 45 minute spin class which is one of my favorite classes because 45 minutes is enough to get really sweaty but not be dead afterwards. Then I taught some Pilates, by myself because the other girl I teach with didn’t show up. Luckily I still felt like a taught a good class and I got some really good feedback from students afterward which is always awesome.

Tuesday I went to a Power Hour class at the gym which was pretty much an hour of circuit workouts which was awesome but KILLER. We did a minute of jumping lunges. Ouch. I hate lunges, but they’re good for me so I won’t complain too much.

Today I went to a 45-minute Body Rock class, which included strength and a circuit style workout. I really like this class because it includes a little bit of everything so I never get bored. I also taught Pilates which went really well even though only 4 people came. I like teaching small classes but it makes me ego feel better when I have a big class. Hey, I’m only human.

Yay workouts.

Do you like Halloween? YES.

Any awesome workouts this week?

Whirlwind.

Hey! Long time no see!

It’s been a crazy week to say the least. Recap? yes.

Thursday:

I had mandatory training for work. In Boone. I couldn’t move into my apartment until Saturday, so I had to make a the three hour trip to Boone for three hours of training. Six hours of driving? Sounds like a good time. Luckily, my mom was sweet enough to come along with me (and drive!) which made for a pretty fun day trip.

I got finished with my training around 12:30, so my mom and I grabbed lunch before heading home. We were hoping to go to Black Cat but the line was already out the door and I was pretty hungry, so we headed across the street to Melanie’s instead. Melanie’s is a cute little brunch place in downtown Boone. They offer a variety of fresh and local ingredients and have a lot of great vegetarian options, always a bonus. I ordered the Omelet of the Day which included feta cheese, artichoke, mushrooms and spinach with a side of fresh fruit. I didn’t remember to take a picture but it was absolutely delicious. I loved the feta cheese and artichokes together with the eggs, and unexpected combination but so good.

Friday:

Friday morning I woke up bright an early to catch a Basic Training class. I only had a few days left in town so I wanted to get in all my favorite group fitness classes before leaving. This workout was a toughie but I loved it.

Friday was also my last day at my internship! They bought me a cake (marble flavored!) to celebrate my last day which was so sweet of them.

It’s got a few slices missing but you get the picture. I’ll pretend like it was gluten-free and didn’t give me a stomach ache the next day. Worth it though.

My internship was such a great experience, I learned so much, got to work on a lot of really cool projects, and got to work with some really nice people. I’m definitely going to miss it there!

Friday evening my boyfriend and I had a date night to spend some time together before I go went to school. We originally planned to go out to dinner, but we both decided we just wanted to stay home instead. We grabbed subs from Jimmy John’s (veggie lettuce wrap for me, lots of meat and bread for him), grabbed a movie from Red Box (Jeff, Who Lives At Home which was different but good, with lots of dark humor) and just enjoyed each other’s company. It was a pretty perfect evening.

Saturday:

Saturday was an apartment packing extravaganza. I feel that by adding extravaganza at the end of something you don’t really want to do it makes it sound more and makes me more likely to do it. Example: Dish Washing Extravaganza! Paper Writing Extravaganza! Root Canal Extravaganza (okay that still sounds awful)! Much more fun sounding.

But before packing I stopped in for one last group fitness class at my gym, kickboxing! I hadn’t been to a kickboxing class all summer and after taking that class I regret it. It was so much fun and I was dripping in sweat by the end of it. It was definitely an amazing workout.

I should mention it’s a bad choice to wait to pack until the day before you move. Learn from my mistakes. At least I got fro yo.

Tart and Oatmeal Cookie flavor with bananas, a peanut butter drizzle and carob chips. Oatmeal cookie might overtake tart for my new favorite flavor, it’s so cinnamon-y and delicious. You better watch your back tart.

Sunday:

Move-in day! It was a long one. My parents and I got into Boone around lunch time so we hit up the Earthfare deli/salad bar to fuel a long afternoon of carrying boxes.

Salad with spring mix, alfalfa sprouts, mushrooms, carrots, chickpeas and feta cheese, plus sauteed veggies and steamed broccoli on the side. Hit the stop.

Enter 2 hours of moving things into my new apartment(!), which I am loving. It’s so nice to have my own room again, apartments are a million times better than dorms. I’ll have to give a tour if I even finish unpacking all the way. Yeah, it could be a few weeks.

My family and one of my roommates then headed out for dinner at Coyote Kitchen. Coyote Kitchen serves what it calls “Caribbean soul food” and it is one of my favorite restaurants in Boone, everything they serve is absolutely delicious. It’s a little pricey for my college budget, but I definitely take advantage and go when my parents are in town.

I ordered a Gabriella burrito sans tortilla (because I like to be difficult):

“Rice, black beans, blackened tofu, sweet red vegan nayo, sweet potatoes, roasted sweet corn, roasted red pepper, and zucchini and squash” with a side of cranberry chipotle salsa.

Unbelievably good. And FYI ordering a burrito with no tortilla is definitely the way to go, they give you way more filling, which is definitely the best part.

After dinner I ran my parents all around town to pick up things for my apartment. Sorry guys.

Monday:

Monday morning my parents and I headed out to Blowing Rock to check out the outlet mall. There weren’t many spectacular deals but I did snag a cut dress from the Gap.

We grabbed lunch at Black Cat before my parents headed out of town. Black Cat is another Boone favorite, they make some of the best burritos I’ve ever had and all for a very college-friendly price. I ordered a “Satay It To Me Softly” (yes, all of their other burritos have equally awesome names):

“Tofu in a spinach wrap stuffed with broccoli, carrots, caramelized onions, a spicy thai peanut sauce, cheese & rice” except minus the tortilla for me again, and a side of coleslaw. The peanut sauce in this bad boy is AMAZING. I would drink it if I could. Not kidding even a little bit.

My parents headed home after lunch, it’s always a little sad to see them go but I definitely excited for what the year has in store.

For dinner we got together with my friends that live in the apartment next door and had a potluck dinner. It was a very college-y spread of chicken, roasted asparagus, Kraft mac and cheese, green beans, cheesy bread, these black bean burgers from yours truly and chocolate chip oatmeal cookies. It ended up being a pretty random mishmash of food, but a good time. We’re going to have so much fun living across from each other this year.

Today:

Today was the first day of classes! What’s up senior year? I can’t believe I’m already a senior, where has the time gone?

But I’ve got to get up early to get books in the morning so it’s bed time for me!

What did you do this weekend?

If you’re in school, how was your first day?

Would you rather have a date night at home or go out?

Thursday Tangents

  1. My little brother is moving into his college dorm tomorrow (a whole 20 minutes down the road, adventurous). I feel old. Luckily, he still acts like an 8 year old so I tend to forget he’s now a legal adult.
  2. I really love the color purple:
Too bad it doesn’t match my hair anymore. Sad part is I didn’t realize I had put on all purple pajamas until I put my contacts in this morning. Then I got dressed for work and put my shirt on inside out. This was all after my morning cup of coffee, I’m thinking I need more sleep.
  3. My rock climbing class last night was lots of fun. Though we spent most of the class learning how to belay so we could pass the belay test and only 15 minutes climbing. I have a week long pass so I’ll have to go back to get more climbing in.
  4. I’m scared of heights. Things you realize 20 feet from the ground on a rock wall.
  5. RAINBOW!
The picture doesn’t even do it justice, this sucker was HUGE. I love rainbows. Yes I’m 5 years old.
  6. I finished some freelance design work for a local restaurant and they had the ads I designed printed at my work so I got to see the final product:
Seeing the final design printed out is my favorite part, but I don’t always get to see the final printed piece. It’s so cool to hold something in my hands that I designed, I will never get sick of that feeling.
  7. The only piece of produce I will never eat:
A “Slimcado”, it apparently has 50% less fat than a regular avocado. GROSS. Excuse me but what exactly is the point of an avocado without the fat? Ew.
  8. I made a purse! pictures coming soon.
  9. I’m taking a 6AM Basic Training class so I should probably get to bed soon.

Do you have any younger siblings (or older)? I have two younger brothers who are 18 (twinsies), and they’re 6’2″ so I can’t boss them around anymore

Would you ever eat a “Slimcado”? No. Gimme some healthy fats please!

Hungry Beast {WIAW}

Happy Hump Day!

I’ve been one HUNGRY beast lately. So this What I Ate Wednesday is actually only a snippet of what I ate yesterday because I’m sure you don’t want to see 20 spoonfuls of nut butter. I wish I was kidding.

Here’s another hungry beast (I love catching them mid-yawn! He looks like a velociraptor). I’ve caught him trying to break into the bag of cat food in the pantry several time today. He’s quite the sneaky little devil.

Breakfast: Peanut butter oats! Again. If variety is the spice of life my breakfast falls somewhere around white bread and mayonnaise (which actually sounds like a really disgusting sandwich). I also had two eggs over easy and a couple spoonfuls of almond butter (I wasn’t kidding when I said I was hungry!) before leaving for work, but no pictures because I was running a little late.

Work snack:

A lemon Good n’ Natural bar. The lemon flavor was on close-out at my local grocery store for only $0.65, so I had to pick up a couple. The flavor is not the best, but they weren’t bad, and bonus is that they’re full of lots of healthy ingredients.

Lunch: My lunch was a little scattered, I went straight from work to my boyfriend’s to see him for a couple of hours before he had to go into work. I was still pretty full from the bar earlier so I stopped at Whole Foods for something small.

Black bean and butternut squash chili. Sooo good. Total opposite of a summer staple but, it was an overcast day and Whole Foods had their AC set to Artic to I was craving something warm. I also picked up some smoke chicken wings and mac and cheese for my boyfriend because I’m a nice girlfriend. It felt really weird to buy chicken wings, I was worried the vegetarian gods might smite me. He said they were delicious though!

Afternoon Snack:

I had a banana with some homemade(!) sunflower seed butter. I made the sunflower seed butter using my grandmother’s peanut butter machine that we dug out of the attic a few weeks ago. I think I’m in love with it. I’ll have to take a picture for you guys next time I have it out.

The banana was followed by a cottage cheese and sunflower seed butter combo, because I was starving but it was too early for dinner.

I’m a little sad that I’m all out of cottage cheese.

Dinner:

I made a quick stir fry with tofu, a frozen veggie mix and Trader Joe’s Thai Red Curry Sauce (which I’m absolutely addicted to) and an un-pictured peach before heading out for the gym and dance class.

Late Snack:

Hungry beast was in full force at this point, that innocent jar of homemade almond butter (apparently I’m a nut butter making machine right now) didn’t stand a chance. I also had an apple, a plum, an egg over easy and a stick of string cheese.

String cheese is such a silly food.

Usually I try to avoid a lot of late night snacking (I have a hard time sleeping after) but my stomach could not be quieted. I don’t know what’s up with my appetite lately but it is monstrous.

I also have to share my workouts for the week because I’ve had some good ones!

Thursday: 6 AM spin class, gotta love starting off the morning with a little (actually a lot) of sweat
Friday: 6 AM Basic Training class and boy was it a good one (you can read about it here), I’m on a serious roll with these early morning workouts! It’s such a nice way to start the day off
Saturday: My first CrossFit class! (Recap here) I’m officially obsessed! I can’t wait to go back next week!
Sunday: A nice relaxing yoga class
Monday: 6 AM Interval Training class, the instructor incorporated lots exercises with the Bosu, which was fun
Tuesday: A 20/20/20 class and my final dance class! I’m going to miss those dance classes, it was so good to get back into the dance studio for a few weeks!

And this morning I took a yoga class with one of my favorite instructors. We focused on hip and low back openers, which was just what I needed, I felt amazing after!

Tonight I’m taking an Intro to Rock Climbing class at a nearby indoor rock climbing facility. I snagged a Groupon for the class a couple months ago and I’m really excited to finally use it. It sounds like it’s going to be a lot of fun an I can’t wait!

How do you deal with an out of control appetite? Nut butter is usually pretty good at quieting my rumbling belly

Have you ever been rock climbing?

Burnt Out {LiveFit Week 7}

This week was a little rough.

As much as I’ve raved about the LiveFit program I’m honestly starting to get a little burnt out on it.

Don’t get me wrong I still think the program is awesome, but my gym routine is getting a little stale. I have serious gym ADD and get sick of workouts pretty quickly and I think I’m hitting the point where I’m done with strictly lifting weights 6 days a week. I’m starting to dread workouts (not okay) and I’m not as excited about it as I was a the beginning of the program.

Not to mention I’m just straight up tired.

Phase Two has 6 days of workouts with just 1 rest day. Sometimes my body is fine with that, but there are times where I can tell I need a rest day but I don’t want to take a day off because it will throw the program off. Well that’s stupid.

I do still want to complete the program, but I think I’m going to give myself more leeway with it. My plan? If I need a second rest day, no big deal, I’ll take it and pick up my workouts where I left off. If I need some variety I’ll shorten the workout a little so I can take that cycling class I’ve been craving. If my quads feel like they’re going to fall off I’ll just skip those lunges! Okay I still need to do the lunges. I guess. If I have to.

It’s all about finding balance. I don’t want to dread a workout. I want the gym to be fun, not some kind of punishment and sometimes that takes a little re-evaluation.

So far this approach has been working out really well. I went to a wonderful spin class yesterday, and whew, my legs were on fire. It’s been far too long. My butt’s now paying for that one, but it was MUCH needed.

Today I made it to a Zumba class (I even got my mom to come with me! She loved it). I like Zumba because it doesn’t feel like a workout until class ends and you realize you’re drenched in sweat. The instructor was this teeny older lady, who was really cute but had no rhythm. Not ideal, but she was still a lot of fun. And she played Mambo No. 5, it’s been a while since I heard that one.

Making time for other forms of exercise has definitely left me feeling refreshed and excited to get the gym. I’m ready to keep tackling LiveFit. Week 8 here I come.

How do you get out of a fitness rut?

What’s you’re favorite 90’s/early 2000’s song? I’m feeling nostalgic =)

Lately.

Hey, it’s been a while! I’ve been feeling a little under the weather so I kept things pretty low key this weekend. Here’s what I’ve been up to lately.

I’ve been crafting up a storm lately. My mom and I painted the door to the playhouse/shed in our back yard because it was looking a little weathered a rough. Pretty much whatever we did to it it couldn’t look worse than it already did. Before:

    After:
ImageI’m also working on crocheting a baby blanket for a friend’s baby shower. We went to elementary school together and I haven’t seen her in forever!
ImageNot close to being done yet, but I’m making progress. I really like making gifts for people whenever I can, it just feels more personal. So if you have a summer birthday you might get a crocheted scarf when it’s 95 degrees out, sorry.
  • Sick:
Blah I hate being sick. I pretty much feel like I have mono, except that I’ve already had it. The lymph nodes in my neck are swollen and sore and fatigue. Sunday I had a headache and body aches on top of that. Not fun. Also stay away from WebMD when you’re sick. I convinced myself for about half an hour that I had West Nile. I called the doctor Monday night to make sure my symptoms weren’t anything bad, she recommended I take Aleve and get some rest. Neither of those sound very fun. I hate painkillers and I don’t like sitting still, but I’m being good and doing both. I’m less swollen today, so I guess it’s working.
  • Workouts:
I’ve been trying to stay active because exercise endorphins always make me feel better. Saturday I went for a 2.5 mile run. It was torture. It’s a poor, poor choice to go running outside when it’s 85 degrees and humid. So much sweat. I was going for 3 miles but I just couldn’t do it. I’ll have to start running early mornings (or on the treadmill – ew) if I want to keep my mileage up.
Sunday I slept. My workout was getting up to walk to the kitchen to make food. And an hour power nap. I never take naps, I’m a weirdo and I don’t like them, but there’s nothing like them when you’re sick.
Monday I did day 1 of Jamie Eason’s LiveFit Trainer. I’m thinking about starting the 12 week program, and I really liked the workout. I’ve been wanting to focus more on strength training and I think it would be helpful
Today I went to a yoga class. It was amazing. I’ve been neglecting my yoga practice it felt so good to do it again. I need to be better about it. My next payday I’m going to try to find some classes to take at a local studio, which I’m very excited about.
  • Finds:
Here’s some fun things I ran into this weekend:ImageYes that’s “Don’t be a Chicken Shit Hot Sauce”. I love that name. Saturday night my family went out to Tijuana Flats. I love Tijuana Flats because their salads are bigger than my head, and they have a hot sauce bar. What more could I ask for in a restaurant? Their hot sauces also have the BEST names. See above example. Another favorite is “Smack My Ass and Call Me Sally”. I might have gotten 5 different types of hot sauce for my meal. Let’s ignore the fact that I ordered a salad.

ImageThis is nerdy, but my mom and I were at Lowe’s the other day picking out paint colors for the door we were painting and I saw this display. Paint colors based on Pantone inks? Whattttt! The designer in me was way too excited about it.
