Happy Friday

I’m so excited today is Friday. Friday is my favorite day of the week (I’m pretty sure everyone else feels the same!), I only have one short class, the entire afternoon to myself and usually a nice dinner out and general college shenanigans at night. The word shenanigans makes me feel like an old man, but I’m rolling with it.

Tonight we have plans for a Thai dinner (so excited!) and Art Crawl. One of my roommate’s has artwork on display in a couple of galleries and I’m really excited to check them out. And get free wine. Priorities. My roommate has an art blog if you want to check out her work!

I got in a nice sweaty workout this afternoon which felt SO GOOD. I’m the worst injured person ever, I can’t deal with sitting still. I did this LiveFit workout. LiveFit workouts are my go-to for strength training because they work and I always feel like jelly afterwards. I’m weird and I really enjoy that feeling. I also did a 20 minute tabata workout on the exercise bike that looked like this:

tabata bike workout

I was sitting at one of the weight machines secretly hating all the people on treadmills because they were running and I couldn’t. Lack of exercises endorphins clearly makes me a grouch. So I decided to hop on the exercise bike and test out my calf/knee to see how it felt, and it felt pretty good so I pedaled my little heart out for 20 minutes. I was good and kept it to just 20 minutes. Progress people.

In addition to a great workout I also plopped myself in the coffee shop with a big mug of coffee and my laptop and got a ton of work done. Feels good. I eve made some fun social media buttons to the side bar. I’m trying to make things over on the blog slowly but surely.

And for something fun for your afternoon:

Things Group Fitness Instructors Say

Most of these are courtesy of Fit Expo

“Yoga block DOWN!”

“You know, when you’re ellipticizing really hard and the handle just ends up in your mouth!”

“I think I just backed over the yoga block”

“My iPod died because I sweated too hard”

“A day without burpees is like a day without sunshine”

I realize I still owe you guys a recap of Fit Expo, it’s coming! I promise!

Have you ever tried tabata workouts? I love them!

What are you doing this weekend?

Live Fit Week 3 Recap.

This week was awesome! It’s been my favorite so far, I seem to be saying this every week but just go with it.

The workouts got 2983427x harder this week. It killed me a little, but I loved it anyway.

Week 3 workouts were increased from 4 days a week to 5 days, with a few more exercises thrown into each workout. The week also focused  on lifting heavier, reps for each exercise were lowered from 12 to 10, while the weight increased from 60% of max effort to 80%.

Workouts this week were no joke. I know the workouts will only get more challenging from here on out (and I’m excited for it!), but I definitely felt sufficiently challenged this week. The past two weeks were focused more on proper form and getting your body acclimated to a consistent lifting routine, which makes sense, but there were days I left the gym wishing my workout felt a little more intense, I definitely didn’t have that complaint this week.

My legs were sore for 3 days after Monday’s leg workout. Seriously. But I already mentioned those awesome single leg deadlifts.  My legs were on fiyah. Along with the killer new deadlift exercise, the program continued to introduce a lot of great new exercises this week. The upper body workouts even got me on the incline and decline benches in the manly section of the weight room. It might sound lame, but I was proud of myself for that, I didn’t modify the exercises because I was intimidated by that section of the gym, I sucked it up and did it, and it was a gratifying experience. Grunting muscles heads can’t keep me out of the weight room.

The I was most excited about this week was seeing results. They weren’t anything huge, but I’m beginning to feel more tone and see some noticeable differences (if I didn’t ruin it with the poor eating I did this weekend – oops). This is a big deal for me, I’ve been working hard to gain some visible muscle tone, have failed pretty miserably at it and I’ve been very discouraged by it. I eat clean, I workout, why am I not seeing results? A lack of weight training apparently. You have to build muscle to see muscle, duh Lea.

Being able to see some progress has been so motivating, and I can’t wait to start this week’s workout!

An Almost Big Girl Job.

Today I have been running around like a chicken with my head cut off. Maybe that’s not an appropriate saying for a vegetarian? I’m not really a fan of headless chickens, but I certainly feel like one right now. Case in point, I just tried to make tea with cold water, clearly my brain is gone.

Welcome to that awesome portion of the college semester where everything is due at the same time. You know all those projects you put off all semester, oh yeah those. I don’t want to think about.

Things I do want to think about? I got a paycheck for some freelance design work I did, I feel like a big girl designer now. It wasn’t a big paycheck, or a very involved project, but I don’t care. My bank account is happy.

Accurate (source)

Actually that piggy bank makes me a little sad. That piggy needs some lovin’.

Speaking of big girl jobs, I finally got an internship last week! Such a huge weight off my shoulders, I’m so excited for the summer to start it, it sounds like it will be a great experience. Bonus, it’s paid. SO EXCITED.

For lunch today I grabbed some black beans and rice from the student union (a lunch time favorite). And the girl working at the cafe gave me the BIGGEST scoop of guacamole to go on top. I’m a fan, the other servers usually skimp on the guacamole. It’s the little things.

Black beans and rice, so simple yet so delicious. I promise they’re there under all the veggies.

I got a good workout in today. Even when I’m crazy busy and stressed a good workout just makes me feel so much better. Everything just seems more manageable under the influence of exercise endorphins. Plus it’s a good way to blow off steam.

I did a 2 mile run on the treadmill, I attempted some HIIT but I could not catch my breath so I toned it down a little bit, I probably got a little too ambitious with my speeds. Oops. I followed that up with upper weights. My arms still feel like jelly. I’ve been really into lifting lately, it’s a nice change of pace from running (or complement) and I like how strong it makes me feel.

For day three of the Stretch for Seven Challenge, I made it to a yoga class this evening to get my stretch on. It was much needed, my muscles were tight! Poor things. I’m currently on the fast track to becoming a hard-core yoga addict. I have absolutely no problem with that.

Side note, the noodle-y feeling you get after a really yoga class is my favorite thing. It is impossible to feel stressed when your body is in noodle-mode. Love it.

What do you do to de-stress? Seriously, help a college student out, I need some serious stress management tips right now.

Welcome to the Gun Show.

Kidding, those aren’t my biceps. I know I had you fooled.

I’ve been working on my upper body strength lately, because frankly it sucks. Mostly, I just want to look like a beast in the gym. Kidding. Actually, I want to improve my upper body strength for functional reasons, like helping my terrible posture. But being able to curl dumbbells the size of small children would be a neat party trick. Also:

You mean you don’t rock climb in heels? Wimp.

I think rock climbing looks so cool. I want to do it (SECURELY strapped into a harness, with lots of people to catch me if I fall). This isn’t really why I want a strong upper body, but it’s a nice dream. It’s on my fitness bucket list. Which I find slightly ironic that I have a fitness bucket list but not a life bucket list, someone help my priorities.

Secretly I also want to marry a future president and have everyone talk about how awesome my arms are. It’s a legitimate career goal.

With my rock climbing and future first lady dreams in mind, I had a pretty awesome workout this morning.

I did 3 sets of 10 reps of a variety of upper body exercises. On the last set I picked up a slightly heavier dumbbell. My arms felt like jell-o. Love it. Watch out Michelle Obama.

I was going to go to a moonlight yoga class this evening, but it rained. And I realized I should be doing more productive things like homework and packing and cleaning, procrastinators don’t get moonlight yoga. So sad. I’m also missing my favorite power yoga class this week. Also sad.

Not sad? Easter break starts at 1:45pm tomorrow. Thank. You. Totally makes up for no power yoga.

And only 3 more days until I can stuff my face with sweets galore.

Rainbows, Black Cats and Bananas

I managed to peel my lazy but out of bed by 11:00 this morning to make it to the gym. I ran a quick warm up mile in 9:00 (fast for me!) and did some leg work with weights. Saturday morning gym goers are crazy. The guy next to me was curling 130 pounders. What!? That’s my body weight, in each hand. I It made my 15 pounds look real wimpy.

Then I took me and my tax refund check to the mall, but had no luck. When I actually have money to spend I can never find anything, without fail. Murphy loves it when I go shopping. I did stop by Wal-mart and bought more fruits and veggies. I know they’re produce is grown in foreign countries and has all kinds of chemicals on it, but it is so cheap, it’s hard to turn down. I picked up some bananas, nectarines, red cabbage, sweet potatoes and plums. Yummy.

The weather in Boone today was so bipolar. It was sun/rain/sun/rain all day long. It even hailed, what the hail? (corny, I know). But that weather is perfect for

It’s really hard to see in the photo, but it disappeared shortly after I took the picture.

I joined some friends for dinner at Black Cat. Always delicious. Unfortunately I didn’t get a picture, again. I’m bad. But it was crazy busy, they ran out of silverware. I got the “Thai Me Up” burrito, it came with rice, tofu, and spinach in a spinach tortilla with a curry sauce and sunflower seeds on top. Sooo good. I cleaned my plate, like a champ.

Speaking of cats, I got to see this cute little guy too.

My friend’s cat Jack, he’s really cute, but a little crazy. He also doesn’t like to sit still when I try to take a picture of him.

Post-dinner plans was Appalachian’s Spring Dance Concert

The dances were really good this year. There was choreography from both students and faculty and they were all awesome. I enjoyed myself, and it really made me miss dance. I need to get back into taking classes if I can ever find the time.

I need to get to bed, I’ve got an early morning tomorrow! But first

I was eating a Chiquita banana and the sticker said “Place Sticker on Forehead. Smile” So that’s exactly what I did. Because sometimes you just need to have a little fun. Thanks Chiquita.

What’s the last silly thing you did?

The past two days have been nonstop. Thursday morning I was up a 6:30 (what is wrong with me?) to hit up the gym to lift some weights. I love lifting weights, but I always feel kind of lost in terms of what exercises to do, I need to start jotting down some ideas before I go. Also I’m not a fan of the meat heads in college gyms, I feel all the grunting and protein shake chugging is unnecessary. But maybe I’m just jealous I’m not curling 65 pound weights, yeah a little.

I also had a marketing exam and other gross schoolwork that kept me inside on a beautiful 75-degree sunny day. Super lame.

Some graphics and printing companies were coming to campus on Friday for so we could interview with them for potential internship/job opportunities. Thursday night, a couple of the companies came up early and there was an event with dinner/hors d’oeuvres and networking opportunities. I went to make a good impression, but it was awkward, a networker I am definitely not. But I did meet some nice people and talk to a couple of the interviewers.

Friday morning I was up early (at 6 am, ouch) to get ready for my interviews and hit up the continental breakfast they were providing. Unfortunately the breakfast was not worth getting up for, it was bagels, doughnuts, and danishes (can I get some fruit, some yogurt, anything remotely healthy). I ended up with half of a bagel and and cream cheese and chugged coffee like it was my job. Not a satisfying breakfast after only 6 hours of sleep.

I had 3 interviews starting at 9 (I was supposed to have 4 but one company couldn’t make it because of a family emergency). My interviews went pretty well except two of the companies were only looking to hire people graduating in the spring, but my third interview went really well, and the woman I talked to was super nice. I can tell my interview skills are definitely starting to get better. I’m still bad at them, and the most awkward conversationalist ever, but at least I get marginally less awkward with every interview I do.

After my last interview I went from this:

to this

in under 15 minutes to go hiking with a friend. It felt good to get out of professional clothes. They make me feel like a little kid playing dress up. And they give me a height complex, I’m 5’4″ and still have to shop in the petite section and get them hemmed. I guess I could wear heels, but I’m clumsy enough without the additional falling hazard. And Asics are 300x more comfy than my flats.

We hiked a trail near campus (2-3 miles maybe? it wasn’t marked) and we were going to walk around Bass Lake, off the Blue Ridge Parkway, but it decided to pour down rain when we got 1.7 miles down the 2.3 mile trail to the lake, so we turned around and went back. Of course it stops raining as soon as we get to the car.

And we found a box full of letters on one of the paths. It was apparently like a geocaching type thing but with letters people had written, too bad they were all rained on and mushy. I took more hiking pictures, I haven’t put them on my computer yet though, maybe later today?

I got back from hiking, back in to normal clothes and went out for Mexican food with some friends for dinner. It was not my favorite, I’m not a fan of Mexican (or I should say I’m not a fan of Mexican food in North Carolina, because I know it is nowhere near authentic) but I enjoyed the company. We went back to my friend’s apartment and watched The Holiday the plot was pretty terrible but Jude Law was in it. He automatically makes every movie better.

See? (source)

Then I PTFO-ed at about 12:30. I was tired.

Now I’m just being a lazy butt and sitting around in bed. Which is perfectly acceptable because it’s Saturday morning. I also got 8 hours of sleep last night for the first time in like 3 weeks (that’s terrible, I know) and it felt glorious. I’m ready to conquer the weekend.
