Holy Sleet & New Goals

Holy sleet mother nature.

sleet

Pardon my very bad weather pun.

We got an inch of sleet here in Boone today. What. And then it started snowing on top of that. Double what. I just want spring, is that such a ridiculous request? Thankfully it will be 65 this weekend, talk about some bipolar weather.

On the bright side, it was a good day for a cup of coffee. But let’s be real, everyday is a good day for a cup of coffee 🙂

Lots and Lots of Goals

Actually I only have three goals to talk about. I just like to exaggerate. I love springtime because it’s such a refreshing time of year (if Mother Nature decides to actually let us have spring this year) and a good time to uh, getyoshitotogether before the end of the school year, graduation, summer, defrost after winter, whatever your situation. So let’s talk goals:

Best Body Bootcamp

best body bootcamp

I’m started Tina‘s Best Body Bootcamp this week (and loving it! My muscles are already crying for mercy in the best way possible). Every week she asks us to set 2 goals to work on throughout the week. This week I’m focusing on:

  • Sleep: I suck at sleeping. That sounds like a ridiculous statement, but it’s true. Most nights I average 5-6 hours for no good reason at all other then I’m bad at going to bed early and I always wake up early. This week I’m trying for at least 7 hours of sleep every night. It’s been a little rocky so far, but I’m trying!
  • Stretching: My legs have been super duper tight lately and I need to stretch more consistently especially after working out. Plus since this tendonitis flare up I’ve been going gung ho on whatever anti-injury measures I can find and stretching seems to be key.

Monthly Resolutions

resolutions_challenge

For the month of March I made the goal to clean up for at least 5 minutes everyday. I was actually pretty successful at this goal, thought you probably couldn’t tell by looking at my room, but it does look a lot better than it did at the beginning of the month which is a plus. My roommates and I even took a day to spring clean our entire apartment and I straightened up my room a lot.

The point of this goal was to get in the habit of picking up after myself, which actually worked. Now I have to pick up at least one thing off my floor before I go to bed (who am I?). Now if I could just get the rest of my life organized…

Now that it’s April (when did that happen?) it means it’s time for a new monthly resolution. I already know I’m terrible at maintaining more than 1 or 2 goals at one time so I’m tying this goal back into one of my bootcamp goals:

SLEEP

Sleepy kitty.

I’m slowly learning that just because I can function on 5 hours of sleep at night doesn’t mean I should and it certainly doesn’t mean it’s healthy. When I was sick a couple weeks ago I slept all day long. Seriously, I think I slept 18 hours that day, at least. And you know what? It felt glorious. Well minus the whole puking my guts out. Sorry that was gross, anyway it was a wake up call (haha, sleep puns) that I feel so much better when I have an adequate amount of sleep.

So my goal this month is to get at least 7 hours of sleep every night. I’ve already failed the past two nights (6.5 and 5.5 hours, yikes), but I’m hoping to redeem myself. I know 8 hours of sleep is ideal for most people, but 7 is a pretty healthy amount and much more attainable for me than 8, so I’m going with that.

Do you set monthly/weekly/yearly goals?

How much sleep do you usually get?

Is anyone else as ready for warm weather as I am? If it snows one more time I will seriously start crying. Not even being dramatic.

Ice Ice Baby & African Dance

Hey guys!

This week is going to be all kinds of crazy, but we are 1.5 weeks from spring break so I can’t complain. In two weeks I will be living it up with my friends at the Outer Banks and I’m a little A LOT excited about.

Speaking of beach-y things here is what Boone looked like today:

boone nc ice storm

And by beach-y things I meant the complete opposite. There’s a good coating of ice over the whole city, which is a little awesome because my two morning classes were cancelled. Sorry to those with responsibilities who had to be at work early this morning, while I was chilling on the couch reading blogs.

Confession: I stole this picture off a random student’s Instagram, thank you mysterious Appalachian instagrammer. I was not about to stand in the freezing rain to take pictures of ice. I like warm things.

Enough weather talk, I’m weathered out here in Boone. I’m not sure if that’s a real word, but it’s how I feel.

If you’re on the hunt for a new and interesting workout, you should definitely try African dance.

You read that right, African dance.

This afternoon I took an African dance class for my dance history class. Every time I take an African dance class (which is much more than you would think for a little white girl like me) I’m reminded of what an AMAZING workout it is. You’re constantly  jumping, turning, skipping etc. African dance uses a very grounded stance, which works those legs like crazy! And you pretty much never stop moving. The class reminded me of cardio dance classes, you know those ones where you feel like you’re not doing that much work until the end of class when you’re covered in sweat? Yeah, like that.

african dancers disney world

Oh you know, just dancing with some African dancers in Disney World circa 2006. Three guesses which person is me.

If you’re looking to spice up your fitness routine you should check out a local African dance class near you! It might push you a little bit out of your comfort zone movement-wise but if you can let go a little it is an amazing experience.

Classes might be a little difficult to find, but you can search local dance studios because they are often offered there, or sometimes they are offered through cultural centers, just keep your eyes peeled!

What’s the most unique workout you’ve done?

What’s the weather like where you are? Icy, and snow is the forecast all weekend. I’m living somewhere warm next.

Marvelous in My Post-Super Bowl Monday {MIMM}

Happy Monday!

I’m not going to lie, I had a late night last night and my alarm clock was one rude awakening this morning. Why is the Super Bowl on a Sunday? I think we all need a day to recuperate afterwards.

Luckily my Monday was still pretty marvelous

(Thanks Katie for hosting!)

Marvelous is… Super Bowl parties! I won’t even pretend like we tried to watch the game. We just wanted an excuse to get together and eat lots of food. And it was some pretty delicious food:

super bowl chips and salsa

Chips and dip, obviously.

sweet potato fries

An attempt at sweet potato chips that ended up being fries, I’m not complaining though!

samuel adams beer

Beer, because what is a Super Bowl party without beer? I’m the one in the group that drinks like an old man so I had an IPA, it was pretty tasty.

chocolate covered strawberries

Chocolate covered strawberries! Sooo good. Can you tell it was all girls at this party?

chocolate covered apple slices

And chocolate covered apple slices.

flourless oatmeal coconut raisin cookies

I made Flourless Oatmeal Coconut Raisin cookies. I followed Katie‘s recipe for Oatmeal Raisin Cookies, but I doubled it, add 1/2 cup of unsweetened shredded coconut, 1/4 cup almond meal, an egg (I felt pretty guilty about adding an egg to a vegan cookie recipe, but not guilty enough to not do it) and pumpkin pie spice. I for the life of me can’t just make a recipe as is, I just can’t help myself. They came out really tasty and the coconut was a fun addition, even the gluten eaters liked them!

super bowl party

Yup, see how we’re all paying 100% attention to the football game?

hard ass board game

And then a game of Smart Ass broke out. I won thanks to the ridiculous amount of useless knowledge I have stored in my noggin. I would consider trying to get on Jeopardy except I have never in my life gotten a final Jeopardy question right and I feel like that is an important part of the game.

If you were wondering, I was pulling for the Ravens because their team color is purple and that is my favorite color. Who says you can’t pick the winning team based on the team colors 🙂 ?

Marvelous is.. Whatever spurred this crazy productivity I have going on right now. Today I did laundry, dishes, tackled a leg workout (lunges, I still hate you lots!) and got some major work done on a speech for my public speaking class. It feels good to check things off the to do list!

productive set up laptop coffee and water

Coffee shops and classical Pandora stations make me 1000x times more productive. I need to keep this in mind.

Marvelous is… No snow in the forecast this week!

Boone weather forecast no snow

I think we’ve had pretty much every form of weather in the past week! Tuesday was sunny and 60 degrees, Wednesday was crazy rain with flash flooding, snow on Friday and Saturday and snow squalls last night. I’m ready for some consistent weather for a change. And no snow means I don’t have to worry about road conditions on my way home this weekend, thank you mother nature.

Marvelous is… PDRs! I did 8.5 slowwww miles on the treadmill on Saturday. I hated spending that long on the treadmill but it was either that or run in the 20 degree snow. No thank you. It took 1:43:00 but I did it so I will take it, and I didn’t go crazy after being on the treadmill for that long so I consider that a major accomplishment. I’ve got 9 miles on the schedule for next week!

Marvelous is… Coffee from the coffee shop on campus, I try to save money and make my own at home, but today I splurged because it seriously ups my productivity levels, and dang is that stuff good. I guess that’s why we pay them so much to make it for us.

counter culture coffee logo

They brew Counter Culture Coffee and their coffee is super tasty. I highly recommend you picking some up if you can find it at a grocery store near you.

It’s been a pretty fantastic Monday, I definitely can’t complain. Now let’s hope the rest of the week goes this smoothly!

Have a great week!

What made your Monday Marvelous?

Did you watch the Super Bowl?

Random Things Thursday

Today has been a longgg day. So I’m doing this post in list form, it’s a little easier on the cranium.

  1. I had my Pilates teacher audition today! It went okay, my nerves got the better of me at some points but I think I did fairly well, so I’m going to be optimistic, I got some good feedback. Now I’ve got a written test to take on Sunday and then I should hear back in a couple of weeks. And actually, I start a 6-week yoga teacher training class this Sunday too, I really enjoyed the Pilates teacher training classes, so this should be fun!
  2. I was a bum today. It was BEAUTIFUL outside and I sat inside for more of the day. I didn’t even go running. I just needed unwind and take a break, it felt really nice but I hate that I missed out on the beautiful weather

    Image

Boone, you sure are a beautiful little town when you’re not dumping snow on me! Now I’m SO ready for spring weather.

  3. I did laundry last night and the dryer didn’t dry my laundry AT ALL. I didn’t have enough quarters for a second drying cycle, 24 hours later and I still have a sizable pile of damp clothes, ew. $1.25 well spent, not. Thanks University Housing.
  4. I’m currently watching ‘My Cat From Hell’ on Animal Planet, it’s so ridiculous. Um, there was nothing on TV. Anyway there’s this cat-whisperer type guy named Johnny Galaxy (no lie) who has ridiculous facial hair and helps people deal with their crazy cats. Though in all honesty he gives some really good advice. I think this means I need to go to bed.
  5. I have been a ravenous beast today. My stomach has literally been grumbling every hour. Not a good thing considering the only food I have in my dorm at the moment is oatmeal, coffee and some spinach. Ohhh dorm life. I need to go grocery shopping, like yesterday.
  6. The right side of my headphones isn’t working, I’ve been using them anyway but they make my head feel lopsided.
  7. Tomorrow. Is. Friday. Thank. Goodness. It will be filled with a spin class, lunch at a real restaurant and maybe a hike if they weather doesn’t suck. I’m so excited, this week has been a long one.
