First Last Day {MIMM}

Happy Monday!

Or not so happy Monday. The weather was pretty miserable on the mountain today. Good day for a nap, too bad that didn’t happen.

Don’t worry, there’s still some Marvelous in my Monday, I just had to look for it a little harder.

It was my first last day of college! I have to admit, I’m not at all excited for this semester. I would be pretty okay with being school being done now. I may change my tune in a couple weeks, I think I’m just burnt out on school. My classes weren’t too bad today: dance history, senior seminar and finance, but I’m not super excited about them. But, FOUR MONTHS UNTIL GRADUATION. Yesss.

But I have my public speaking class tomorrow, dun dun dun… I’m scared.

I have lunch breaks! This is exciting because apparently the only time I’m not thinking about food is when I’m setting up my class schedule and I always sign up for classes straight through lunch and end up eating in the hallways in between classes. Now I have time to go back to my apartment and eat a real lunch and watch Paula Deen. Priorities people.

I did some weightlifting! I’m not a fan of leg work (boo lunges) but I did some today and my quads were burning! I just kept reminding myself how good it is for me. And I actually didn’t hate it too much this time around. I still hate lunges though.

20 mile week! I’m pretty sure that’s my highest mileage week ever. Getting to that 10-mile race! And maybe a half marathon… who knows…

Roomie frozen yogurt run! For pretty much the first time ever. We all have crazy schedules so it’s almost impossible to get us all together at once.

Strawberry yogurt with strawberries (apparently I had a strawberry hankering Saturday night?), white chocolate chips and GUMMY BEARS. It has been too long since I’ve eaten gummy bears. That my friends is a problem that needs to be solved ASAP.

New student union! App recently added a new wing to our student union and it is SWANKY. I had a club meeting in one of the new rooms and it is sooooo cool. And the new wing means that my Pilates classes will be in an actual group fitness room (they closed it unexpectedly in the middle of last semester because of the construction and I had to teach in a random room that wasn’t at all meant for classes) I’m excited to have a real room back.

Speaking of Pilates my first class is tomorrow and I get to teach a new class format that uses weights and other equipment. I’m excited! It’s going to be CRAZY with all the resolution-ers and get-in-shape-for-spring-break-ers, but I won’t complain about a big class!

My friends and I go to a bible study class on Sundays and the couple that leads it brings their 8 year old daughter with them. She is very cute and super artsy and drew pictures of us during the class. Too sweet. We also fill out prayer request cards and trade them with another person, I got her card and it was too cute. I love the rainbows and sunshine! She reminds me of myself a little when I was younger.

Treadmill Love.

I’m not afraid of a little sweat.

I wanted to take a second to talk about the new love in my life, and the source of my incredibly attractive sweat stains – The Treadmill.

I’m sure all you runners are wondering what in the world is wrong with me. The treadmill is really just a torture device we suffer through when the weather is too horrible to head outside. I’m even guilty of hating on the poor thing. But really the treadmill does have it’s benefits. Really. No really.

As horribly monotonous as the treadmill is, it’s been a really helpful tool for me lately. The treadmill and I may have our differences but when we get it right, it’s so so good.

Oh treadmill, let me count the ways I (sometimes) love you:

  • You let me get my run in when it is both 29485724985 and -29483724985 degrees outside. I’ll admit I’m a complete wimp when it comes to running in less than ideal conditions. I hate the cold and running in the heat is just plain miserable. So I take it inside. Considering highs in North Carolina have been in the 100s, in addition to that lovely NC humidity, I’ll take running in place in a climate controlled gym over braving the oven outside.
  • You have a Stop button. I’ve been having some issues with pain in my foot lately and it seems to be especially bad after a run. It’s been getting better so I’ve been incorporating short runs (2.5 miles or less) into my workouts. The treadmill is perfect right now because if my foot starts hurting I can hit the stop button and hop on a bike instead. I don’t have to hobble a mile home.
  • You help me get speedier. I could not do speed work without a treadmill. I don’t have a fancy-smancy garmin, so I have no idea how fast I’m running, except when I’m on a treadmill. It also means I can wimp out and slow down, unless I want this to happen:
    Oof. I’m sure that ended well.
  • Sometimes you make life easier. Treadmill running is easier, sometimes it’s a cop-out, sometimes I just need running to be less hard. As lame as that sounds.
  • How else can I run and watch Paula Deen at the same time? Riddle me that.
    That tower of butter makes me want to run faster.

What are your weekend plans? I’m going to go see Pilobolus tomorrow afternoon and I ama BEYOND excited about it!

I saw them perform last year and it was absolutely amazing. They are a spectacular dance company. I can’t wait!

LiveFit Week 5

Whew, Phase 2 is no joke.

This week’s workouts were longer. And added in cardio. Holy cow.

I think I’ve woken up with DOMS everyday this week. I love the challenge but I definitely leave the gym everyday exhausted.

Things I’m loving:

There are still new exercises introduced every week which I love. I get more and more comfortable with the weight room every week and I feel that all these new exercises are giving my body a great new challenge and breaking me out of an exercising rut.

Cardio! I missed cardio, I like that it’s back in my life. I’ve even started easing back into running, and my foot doesn’t seem to be protesting too much. The time off from cardio was nice too though, it made me appreciate getting back into it.

The supersets are also another great new challenge. I’m feeling the burn on those!

Things that aren’t my favorite:

Phase 2 workouts are lonnnngggg. They take me about 90 minutes on average, and the frequency has been bumped up to 6 days a week. Luckily, I’m not in school right now and I have a three hour work day so I have plenty of time for a long workout, but it would be tough to do while I’m in school. Also 90 minute workouts 3 days a week are a lot. There were a couple of days where I did NOT want to workout, I felt better after getting to the gym, but the thought of a 90 minute can feel so daunting, especially if I’m already tired. Also days like wednesday I completed the leg workout and a yoga class, I was at the gym for 2 hours and 15 minutes and so ready to go home.

I feel like such a gym rat.

The supersets, I know I said I like them, and I do, but it’s really hard to do a superset on two different pieces of equipment in a busy gym without being a total equipment hog. I try to do what I can, and complete another exercise until the equipment is free again, but I’m sure it’s not as effective.

Indoor cardio machines. Not something I hate about the program, but indoor cardio machines are the best way to do the 30 minutes of cardio when it’s 34529874592847 degrees outside. The elliptical is a little mind-numbing. But Paula’s Best Dishes kept me company on the elliptical today, so I can’t complain too much.

Longer workouts means I can eat a butter cake right? Right.

I love Paula Deen, I don’t care what people say about her. And she looks damn good post-weight loss. I secretly want her to be my adopted southern grandma.

So overall this was a tough week. But I plan to keep the program up and enjoy the challenge. Hello new muscles.
