Marvelous in My (Kinda) Monday {MIMM}

Happy Tuesday! I’m a little late to the Marvelous in My Monday party this week, but since Monday was a holiday today is kinda like Monday. Kinda. Just go with it.

(Thanks Katie!)

Marvelous is… three day weekends. Hollerrr. It’s been a crazy week at my internship. On Friday we moved our office into a different building for the summer and it was definitely a hectic day. A Monday off was welcomed with open arms.

Our offices actually relocated to a dorm on Duke campus. Yup, my new office is a dorm room, complete with dorm furniture and all. As strange as it sounds I will take it because it’s much more spacious than a cubicle!

Marvelous is… Getting to spend sometime with the other interns on move-in day! Right now there’s only three of us, but the rest of us will be starting next Monday and there will 20+ interns running around. I’m so excited to be surrounded by other college-aged kids, I can’t even tell you.

Marvelous is… The farmer’s market! It’s so good to be back to the monstrous farmer’s market in Raleigh. It’s open 7 days a week and has tons of vendors. Sometimes living in a agriculture-based state spoils me 🙂 Pictures are coming later this week.

Marvelous is… My new blueberry plant from the farmer’s market. Fingers crossed it actually grows blueberries instead of just dying on me. My thumb is more on the brown or black side. I just want some free blueberriesssss.

Marvelous is… Tree lady. My boyfriend and I ran into her while we were walking to the Raleigh Rose Gardens (if you’re a local you need to check that place out, it’s gorgeous! And free!). Pretty clever.

Marvelous is… Rainbows on the drive home.

You can just see the bottom of it in this picture, but it was more vibrant in person. Rainbows make rush hour traffic much more bearable.

What made your Monday Marvelous?

Do you work in an office?

Have you ever been an intern?

What is your state known for? Cheerwine, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts and our Outer Banks!

Let’s Play Catch Up {MIMM}

I feel a little bad that I’ve been this little blog lately.  I haven’t been around much but I’ve had plenty of marvelous things going on around here. So I thought I’d catch you up on the last week and a half, because life’s been a little bit of a whirlwind since then!

(Thanks Katie!)

Marvelous is… Graduation!

I don’t technically get my degree until I finish my internship this summer, I walked and I’m out of Boone so that’s close enough. I’m not going to lie though, it’s definitely bittersweet to graduate. I’m ready to move on to a big city (tiny mountain living is only charming for about 4 years) and a big girl job I’m going to miss my college friends a lot.

Marvelous is… My internship with the American Dance Festival! I started on Wednesday and they had me jump right into the swing of things. I’ve already started working on lots of fun design projects and I can already tell I’m going to learn so much this summer. I’m also excited for when the festival actually starts and I’ll be able to take classes!

Marvelous is… Doing a little good. This Sunday my church did a “Church on the Street” event where instead of a typical church service, they had us go out and help with community projects around the area. My mom helped paint some of the rooms in the Children’s wing of the church. It’s been way too long since I’ve done any volunteer work and it felt good to help out again. I need to get back in the habit of it!

Marvelous is… Artspolure, an arts and crafts festival in downtown Raleigh.

There was so much beautiful artwork being sold. I wish my tiny budget had more room for local, handcrafted art, but notsomuch. One day when I get a big girl job it will happen. I did get a really cool coffee mug for $8 which I have been more than excited to used every morning since.

Marvelous is… the Flying Biscuit!

I had an egg white omelet with mushrooms and spinach, with a side of rosemary potatoes. This meal was salt-city (way more than than previous times I’ve been) but I won’t even pretend like I didn’t finish the whole thing with a big glass of water. It does pain me a little to eat here now that I can’t enjoy their enormous complimentary biscuits, but I still enjoy their cranberry apple butter with a spoon, that stuff is amazing.

Marvelous is… early morning workouts. Okay, let’s be honest, waking up at 5:30AM is not marvelous, but having your entire workout done before 7:30 AM certainly is. My schedule is now 10-6 with a 30-45 minute commute home (depending on traffic), a nighttime workout is just not happening so getting it in early gets it out of the way and peps me up for the rest of the day.

What’s marvelous in your Monday?

What did you do this weekend?

Are you a morning or nighttime exerciser? During school I went through phases of being a nighttime exerciser, an afternoon exerciser and a morning exerciser (gotta switch things up right?) but when I’m at home I usually stick to the morning, I loose my motivation not too long after that.

PS I’ve been really horrible at commenting/responding to e-mails and comments and I promise I will catch up! I’ve been taking a breather from social media which feels nice but I’m hoping to catch back up on my Feedly, blog and inbox soon!

Excitement {MIMM}

I hope you guys had a very marvelous Monday, I know I did. Thank youuuu spring break!

(Thanks Katie!)

Marvelous is… Sleeping for 9 WHOLE HOURS last night. Glorious doesn’t even begin to describe it. I can’t even tell you the last time I got more than 7 hours of sleep much less 9. Clearly sleep needs to be a bigger priority in my life.

Marvelous is… Pilates teacher training! I was at training all weekend (hence me being MIA) and I learned sooo much. I can’t wait to take everything I learned back to my classes, I feel like all the knowledge I gain is going to make my classes a million times better. It was such a great experience, I just have the Mat 1 training done, so I’m hoping to work my way through the rest of the trainings in the next year or so.

Pilates teacher training manual

And the studio I did the training at was absolutely beautiful, I will definitely have to take some classes there over the summer.

Marvelous is… Random frozen custard runs.

goodberry's frozen vanilla custard with chocolate chips
We went to Goodberry’s which is a local NC-only chain, but if you’re ever in the Triangle area go get yourself some. It’s soooo good. I got the vanilla custard with chocolate chips mixed in and it tasted like a straight up cup of Oreos. I love fro yo, but sometimes you just need some heavy-duty custard.

Marvelous is… Thai dinner on a Thursday night.

vegetarian thai food cha da thai

Some friends came to my Thursday night Pilates class and we ended up going out to dinner afterwards at Cha Da Thai (their the only Thai restaurant in town so it’s a good thing their food is good!) which was an awesome treat on a weeknight. I think I could eat Thai food any day of the week and be perfectly content.

Funny story is that they served me the completely wrong dish. I actually ordered the Pad Cashew with tofu (Sauteed with tomato-based red sauce, cashews, onion, carrot and bell peppers), but they gave me the Pad Khing Sod with tofu (Stir-fried with fresh ginger sauce, mushroom, onion, bell peppers, baby corn and carrot). Not even close, and I almost sent it back, but I ordered it last time I ate there and I remembered it being delicious so I ate it anyway. It was just as delicious the second time around, even if it wasn’t what I ordered.

Marvelous is… seeing this temperature while driving around town.

70 degree weather

Marvelous doesn’t even begin to describe. I’m so ready for warm weather again.

Marvelous is… That I’ll be at the beach in less than 2 days! It’s supposed to be super cold (like 45 degrees, what?) but I don’t even care. That just means I can spend all day in the aquariums 🙂

Marvelous is… a much needed yoga class. It’s been too long since I’ve been to one and I can tell my muscles were angry with me for it. The class actually ended up being a Yin-style class which was pretty awesome. Basically you hold poses that require very little  muscular effort for extended periods of time (we held poses for 3-4 minutes) to open up the joints and connective tissues. Wikipedia does a better job of describing it than I do if you want to learn more about the style. It was pretty different from most classes I’ve taken before but it was very peaceful and I really enjoyed it. I did miss my down dogs though.

Marvelous is… I GOT THE INTERNSHIP I INTERVIEWED FOR!!!!!! Excuse me while I squeal like a little girl. But eeeeeee!!! I’m so excited! I will be doing graphic design for the American Dance Festival this summer! It’s pretty much most perfect internship for me and I can’t believe I got it! I actually applied for it last year and didn’t get it, but tried again and it paid off! Cue the excited face:

excited faces

I was in the car on the way home from Boone when they called and told me I got the internship and I pretty much car danced the rest of the way home because I was so excited.

Thursday Thoughts

  • Walking through the grocery store in sweaty biker shorts post-gym sesh is awkward. People stare. Especially when you’re lugging around a gallon of soy milk. Don’t care.
  • I got a comforter for my apartment next year for $9. Thank you Target, I love you.
  • Cats are cute:

But they sure do poop a lot. I spent Wednesday morning volunteering at my local SPCA. The cats were adorable, and friendly, but I cleaned 20 litter boxes by myself. I then considered bathing in a pool of hand sanitizer. But it was for a good cause, so I won’t complain too much, they’re cute little faces make it worth it!
  • I need these in my life:

Wine bottle bow ties. Genius. Who thought wine drinking could get any classier?
  • I hate Jamie Eason, but I really love her. This week’s LiveFit workouts have been killing me in the best way possible.

Single leg deadlifts kill me every time. Julie mentioned them last week. It makes muscles burn that I didn’t even know I had. But they are secretly my favorite exercise of the day, apparently I’m some sort of masochist. I did them on Monday and my legs are STILL sore today. They are no joke.

  • Today marks a month at my internship! I’m still learning lots! I don’t talk about what I do there too often because I had to sign confidentiality agreements and what not, but I’ve gotten to work on a huge variety of projects. When I got the internship I was a little wary, because the business is fairly small, but that turned out to be great because they treat me like a real employee. I’m really enjoying the experience!
  • Speaking of design, I’ve been hard core nerding out on some graphic design podcasts lately. I could listen to people talk about logos, Adobe and business cards for hours. Nerd alert.

The Deeply Graphic Designcast is my current favorite. The cover a huge variety of design topics and they give a lot of great tips and resources for designers. If you’re looking for some design inspiration/resources/tips or if you just need to relish in your inner design nerd, check them out.

  • I’m leaving for Spartanburg, South Carolina for the weekend tomorrow to visit my grandfather. I’m excited to see my grandfather, but there’s no internet there. Help.
  • I’m officially re-addicted to yoga, I can’t get enough. More on that tomorrow.

Well I’m off to bed, have a good night!

Listen to any good podcasts lately?
I’m on a serious podcast kick at the moment, and I’m open to suggestions if anyone has one they love! Any and all topics are welcome.

Weekend, Workouts and Lately-s.

I’ve been a little busy lately. I love it. I’m starting to miss the busy-ness of college life (but definitely NOT the stress). I just like having lots of things to do and being able to get out of the house.

Saturday started at the Farmer’s Market. I loved it, which is no surprise, the farmer’s market is always amazing. I left with kale (two bags this time!), sweet potatoes, strawberries, blueberries, peaches, summer squash, zucchini, and beets. Not beats farm fresh produce, nothing.

Saturday evening my parents and I attended a going away party for the pastor at my church. I go to a Methodist church and the pastors get shuffled around the district every 4-6 years. It’s interesting to get a new perspective on things from a new pastor, but it always stinks when it’s time for a good one to leave!

The celebration included dinner (which was barbecue, so I brought my own tupperware full of hippie food – squash, kale and tofu), but the highlight was desert. Three words: Homemade Ice Cream. Sooooo good.

Chocolate peanut butter ice cream. I die. It was pure cold, chocolately, peanut butter heaven. I haven’t had ice cream in like 6 months, and I think I’m just going to stop eating it unless it’s homemade. Store bought cartons just don’t compare.

My pastor LOVES homemade ice cream, so it was only appropriate that his party included it. There was lots of fun flavors like banana, peach, Cheerwine (a local NC soda) and sweet potato with ham. I know. The sweet potato part sounds awesome, but then I saw the ham part, which was a downer. Maybe I’m biased but, meat in ice cream is just wrong.

There was also a fun Jeopardy-based skit, which was pretty funny. It was definitely un-rehearsed, but it made it that much funnier.

Sunday afternoon I went to a Pilates class. One of my favorite teachers was teaching, she’s so nice but she will work you! My poor little abs were screaming at me by the end of class, she’s no joke! But I secretly love it, and it definitely gave me some inspiration for my classes in the fall! Sometimes the ordered structure of Pilates exercises gets a little old, so I’ve been trying to find ways to keep my classes fresh.

Monday morning started with my internship.

I’m still oddly loving the business look. I’m more dressy than everyone else at the office, but it makes me feel adult-y. So I don’t care.  Black slacks make my tiny 5’4″ legs look long, always a plus.

Post-internship I did two yoga podcasts. Amazing. I get into this bad habit where I neglect my practice, come back to it, remember how awesome it is, then forget again.

Dear yoga, I’m sorry I’m so flakey.

My recent yoga neglect is exactly why I’m participating in Courtney‘s June Yoga Challenge

The goal is three yoga practices a week. I think this will definitely help me and yoga rekindle our love for each other. My muscles will appreciate too. They’ve been tiiigghttt lately.

Monday night I met with a running group at the gym for a 5k run. This was my first time running with other people (sad, but none of my friends run, despite my constant persuasian. One day.) I was the youngest by about 10 years, but it was still fun. It was nice to actually talk to someone while I was running and it kept things more interesting. I’ll definitely be doing it again, it’s also nice to be able to talk to people about running, because I rarely get to do it. Except on here, but sometimes actual, physical conversation is good too.

Today has been busy! I went to my internship this morning, had an intense case of creative block which SUCKS, but nothing a little sleep won’t help. I headed home for lunch, then straight over to my boyfriend’s apartment. It was so good to see him. He’s been working a lot and it’s been a challenge to line up our schedules, but it’s a treat when it works out.

I met a friend from high school at Moe’s for dinner. I love Moe’s and was experiencing major withdrawals while in Boone, it was good to get my fix in. I haven’t seen my friend since winter break, it’s been far too long and we had lot’s of catching up to do. We talked about life, our internships (she’s got an awesome one!) and people we went to high school with. The girl time was much needed. As was the burrito bowl.

After Moe’s I swung by the gym to start Week 2 of the LiveFit trainer, which I’m still loving. The tricep pushups killed me a little today, but I still loved it.

What did you do this weekend?

Treadmill Desk, Dinner and a Deck of Cards

Today way day 2 of my internship, they asked me to work the whole day today which was awesome. Though it definitely made me realize how much sitting all day kind of sucks. If I get a job as a graphic designer post-graduation, I will be the crazy health-freak sitting on an exercise ball instead of an office chair. Or maybe I’ll just order a treadmill desk.

Except maybe treadmills and Photoshop don’t mix.

Sitting just makes me antsy, I’m a super fidgety person and I literally never stop moving. I’m totally that annoying person in a waiting room that tapping my feet or fingers on everything. Sorry.

For dinner my family and I headed out to Zoe’s Kitchen which recently opened up near my house. I’ve heard of them before but have never had the chance to visit one of their other locations.

The vegetarian (and vegan!) options were marked on the menus, which I’ve noticed is becoming more common in restaurants. I love when restaurants do this, it shows they’re making an effort to accommodate vegetarians which makes me instantly fall in love with them. My usual menu browsing goes something like “chicken, chicken, pork, salmon, pork, beef, turkey, I wonder if I can get that without bacon, chicken, steak, oh here’s something!”. It’s nice to skip that.

Overall the food was really good. I got the veggie kabobs, which came with a Greek salad, braised white beans and pita bread. The pita bread was passed along to my brother, I think he has a garbage disposal for a stomach.

In my mind it’s pretty difficult to make vegetables taste bad, but the kabobs were really flavorful and I love any meal where a salad is included, none of this extra charge crap. The white beans were also really delicious. Kind of like a soup, but not, mostly just kind of awesome.

Post dinner I headed to a Pilates class at the gym. It was wonderful, I’ve been missing my weekly Pilates class the past couple of weeks. This class was a little more group fitness-y and less traditional than the class I usually take, if that makes sense. Sometimes a change is nice and my core was definitely feeling it. Always good. I did a few quick sets of leg exercises (squat, lunges, etc. nothing exciting) before heading home.

I saw a girl in the weight room with a deck of cards. At first I was confused as to why she had them, maybe she wanted to be prepared for a potential impromptu Go Fish games? But I realized she was using them to set up her workout. Genius idea. The type of exercise was determined by the suit of the card and the number on the card determined the number of reps.

I’m totally going to steal her idea. The only downside is it makes for a pretty long workout, but it would keep things interesting. I have massive gym ADD, I’m pretty mentally over it after an hour, so I’m constantly looking for ways to keep the gym more interesting (hence, group fitness mania).

I’m taking a spin AND yoga class in the morning. I’m excitedddd!

First Day

Of my internship today!

It went pretty well! I was nervous because I had no idea what I would be doing, but it all went quite smoothly. The company is letting me be really hands on with a lot of the projects and I can tell I’m going to gain a lot of great experience this summer.

I also got my gym membership reactivated so I will be hitting up the group fitness classes like crazy starting tomorrow. I can’t even decided which to take! Pilates? Yoga? 20/20/20? All sound amazing. I love group fitness classes, I feel so much more motivated when I’m sweating it up with other people. Plus my foot is feeling a little funky after my last couple runs, so I’m trying to cut back on the running some this week because…

I’m officially registered for the NCRC Invitational 10K! I’m nervous because it’s going to be a big race, and I’m a slow poke, but I’m still super excited for it. 6.2 miles here I come! I’m cautiously optimistic about it after my fantastic run on Friday, even though my calves are still a little sore.

My current position. I propped my calves up on my foam roller because I’m currently too lazy to roll them out, I figured this was better than nothing. I’m not sure it’s actually having any effect on my muscles, but I like pretending that it does. I also like that my camera phone is making my legs looking 20 shades tanner than they actually are. Thanks phone.

Let’s also ignore the fact that I haven’t finished unpacking my room yet. I hate unpacking. And packing. I would gladly pay someone to do it for me, and by pay I actually mean I’ll bake you cookies, because a dozen cookies is minimum wage right now isn’t it?

Today has been kind of a stinky day.

It started with a relaxing yoga class at the Y, which was not stinky. It was very zen and awesome.

Then I spent an hour at the DMV (the funnest place on earth, right). My license expires next month so I needed to get a new one while I was home. My renewal only took 2 minutes, and I waited in line for 58. Awesome. Doubly awesome that I got in line behind 3 different people that didn’t speak English. I love cultural diversity. I don’t love waiting in line at the DMV.

I definitely won’t miss this picture. But this is the last ID picture from my purple haired days (circa 2005-2009), sad, some days I miss it, but some days I appreciated not being constantly stared at. Also, a good indication I needed a new license, I haven’t been under 18 for almost three years.

The stinkiest part of my stinky day? I found out I didn’t get the internship I really wanted. I was trying to be positive and think about the things I’m thankful for, but I just wanted to have a pity party instead. Not productive, I know. But I spent a solid two hours looking for more internships and all I found are either unpaid (not a deal breaker, but I am broke), uninteresting, I can’t get college credit for (the whole reason I’m looking) or I’m under-qualified for. It didn’t help the whole pity party situation. The internship I found was perfect, and now that I didn’t get everything else fails in comparison. I also really want to eat a freaking cookie.

I’m letting myself wallow for a little bit because starting tomorrow I’m not allowed to be a Negative Nancy about it and I’m starting some serious internship searching. Anyone in need of a graphic design intern? I’ll bake you cookies, and you don’t even have to pay me, but it would be nice.

On the bright side, dinner was delicious. My parents took me out to Sweet Tomatoes, I took full advantage of the salad bar.

Double plates are a must. And I cleaned both of them. I also got several “is-she-really-going-to-eat-all-that?” looks from some of the unsuspecting people around me. Yes, I will, I don’t play with my veggie consumption.

Then I got to go to Target. AKA the most wonderful place on earth. Boone doesn’t have a Target (lame), and our Wal-Mart does NOT cut it. Those red bulls-eyes just feel like home.

I’m going to a Pilates class in the morning, should be fun!

Things I Did Today

  1. Made pancakes for breakfast

  2. This workout. It was a good one. My butt muscles are already sore. That’s weird, TMI, sorry.
  3. Watched too much daytime Television. I can’t tell if I actually like daytime shows or if I just like the fact that I’m home to watch them and still bumming around in PJs at noon.
  4. Drank swamp watera green smoothie. Or a mostly green smoothie. Well, it at had spinach in it. Image

Soy milk, strawberries, frozen spinach and a side Jenny the cat.

  5. Phone interview for a graphic design internship. Hopefully they liked me!
  6. Made the blog look a little prettier. It’s still a work in progress, but getting there.
  7. Things I didn’t do today: 99% of my to do list, I should get on that soon.
