Running & Injury City.

Let’s talk about running.

I’m not doing any of it right now. Boo. I feel like I’ve been in injury city lately. Can we all have a giant injury pity party? I think I need one. And I know most of you runners have dealt with injuries at one point or another.

They suck.

I’ve had a nagging foot injury that crept up last month after my Tar Heel 10-Miler that has gradually gotten more painful. One of these days I will actually make it to the doctor but until then I’ll just be bratty and complain about it.

I have to admit, I’m pretty terrible at dealing with injuries. Mostly, I’m just stubborn and continue running/dancing/exercising despite the pain which inevitably makes things worse. Funny how that works. True story: my senior year of high school I tore my hamstring during dance class and didn’t notice for 3 days, I guess I had some serious endorphins rushing through my system?

Even though I’m still a little (okay a lot) stubborn when it comes to exercise, I’m slowly that rest and recovery is critical to not getting injured, and that doing plyo on a hurt foot is a really terrible idea. Between dealing with tendonitis and now my foot, these injuries are really cramping my style. I miss running and I’ve only got a small window of time before things get unbearably hot here in NC.

I’m not really sure where I’m going with this post other than I’d love to hear your injury stories and how you dealt with it, because obviously I’m not doing a very good job with mine. Any tips for injury prevention/how to not go crazy without running? Tina actually just posted a great post about the benefits of injuries and she brings up a lot of great points about how injuries force you to listen to your body, try new things and train smarter.

Here’s my I-refuse-to-get-injured-again game plan:

  1. Go to the doctor – I’m only resisting it because I’m pretty sure it’s going to go like this: “Ice it and take some naproxen sodium”. I know there’s really not much they can do, but I hate paying for a doctor’s visit just to hear that. And why are doctors visits so expensive? Lame.
  2. Stretch, stretch and stretch again – sometimes I’m really on the ball about stretching and sometimes I really stink at. I want to get more consistent with it. I’ve been neglecting yoga like crazy lately and I can tell my muscles seriously hate me for it. Sorry muscles.
  3. Foam roll my little heart out – Along with yoga, I’ve been neglecting my foam roller, I busted it out the other day and my muscles were crazy tight. Sorry again muscles.
  4. Drink more water – a well hydrated body is a happy body.
  5. Strength training – as much as I hate lunges (I’m pretty sure they qualify as torture) strong and balanced muscles help prevent injuries. Luckily, Best Body Bootcamp has been helping me in this area.
  6. Sleep – it’s essential for recovery, and even though I suck at getting enough sleep, I’m trying to make a really effort to get my 7 hours every night.
  7. Build up mileage slowly – When I can run again. I thought I was already adding pretty slowly, but it’s pretty clear my needs some time to adjust to longer distances because my injuries tend to happen when I’m training for races.
  8. Lots and lots of spin classes – I’m addicted to that post-cardio endorphin rush, so I will be hitting up plenty of spin classes to get my fill of endorphins in a low impact way.

Speedster.

I actually went to a 6AM spin class this morning, my favorite instructor ended up subbing for the class AND we ended class with tabatas to Macklemore and I think that was the fastest I’ve ever pedaled. Best way to end a spin class everrrrr.

Have you ever dealt with injuries? If not I’m super jealous and you need to spill your secrets ASAP.

If so, how did you keep yourself from going crazy?

Are you a fan of spin?

ViPR Tubes

Have you guys ever heard of ViPR tubes?

ViPR tubes

I hadn’t until a couple of weeks ago. App’s recreation department got a set of these a couple weeks ago. Since I’m a group fitness instructor, I had the opportunity to attend a demo on these guys. The verdict? They’re pretty awesome and a great way to spice up a workout.

ViPR tubes (which stands for Vitality , Performance and Reconditioning), are hollow, weighted, rubber tubes. They have 3 handles, two vertical handles on one side, and a single horizontal handle on the opposite side.

So what can you do with it? Well anything.

These tubes are great for both strength training and cardio. They can add weight to squats and lunges, either by holding the tubes like this:

Or standing it up on one end and tipping the tube in either direction:

The vertical handles can be used to do exercises like shoulder presses, chest presses, lat raises and bicep curls.

ViPRs can also amp up your push ups and planks by placing the tube on its side and placing your hands on the cylinder, this creates some instability and gives your core one serious workout. We did push ups on the tube and they were killer!

ViPR tubes can also be incorporated into cardio circuits. They add some major resistance to speed skaters and heismans:

They can also be add some extra resistance to BURPEES! Because burpees need to be more difficult. Add in a chest press at the top of the burpee (instead of a jump) to add in some fun. Or pain.

One of my personal favorite exercises we did was army crawls while pushing the tubes across ground. Killer. Then instead of turning around and pushing it back, we army crawled backwards while pulling the tube back with us. Hurts so good.

Incorporating ViPR tubes into your strength training or a cardio circuit could be a great way to change things up next time your at the gym. They’re super versatile and work almost every muscle in your body, pretty awesome if you ask me.

Interested? You can find more information and exercises here:

Have you tried ViPR tubes before?

How do you change up your workout routine?

I’m in no way affiliated with ViPR, I’m pretty sure they don’t even know I exist, I just thought they were an awesome new fitness tool!

Week 2 BBBC Goals

Today has been an interesting day. Mostly because my 8AM class started of like this:

twitter feed

I watched the man eat a guinea pig, A GUINEA PIG. WHY. Actually, I didn’t watch it happen I glued my eyes to my laptop in an attempt to not puke or cry. Each would have been equally embarrassing.

Oh it gets better.

twitter feed

FYI my 8AM is a Leadership in Technology class, I’m pretty sure that has nothing to do with eating bull reproductive parts. Unless I skipped that section of the syllabus.

What a great way to start of the morning. Or something.

(Shameless self-promotion: you can follow me on twitter @coffeeandgreens)

Best Body Bootcamp Goals Week 2

Monday started week 2 of Best Body Bootcamp, which I’m absolutely loving – my muscles hurt so good and it’s actually making me enjoy strength training again, miraculous.

Best Body Bootcamp

Last weeks goals actually went pretty well. Tina has a check-in sheet for us to check off daily if we achieved our goals, typing in that little ‘x’ gives me enough satisfaction to try really hard to achieve my goals everyday. Who knew a little ‘x’ was all it took?

  • Stretching – I was really good about this one, I think I only missed one day. Stretching is pretty ingrained in me after so many years of dance, as long as I remember to do it I’m pretty good about it.
  • Sleep – I’m making progress! There were a 5 and 6 hour night that were not so great, but I made a much better effort at actually trying to get enough sleep. But sometimes procrastination happens and you are up until 1:00AM writing a speech for your public speaking class. Whoops.

A new week means new(ish) goals:

  • Drink 60 oz of water everyday – I suck at drinking water. I don’t hold a lot of liquid and I hate having to get up every 20 minutes to pee, but I definitely see a huge difference in my workouts and energy when I’m well hydrated. I know 64 oz is usually the norm for water goals but I have my trusty 30 oz Eddie Bauer water bottle, so I’m aiming to drink two of those everyday. So far so good, and my bladder is getting a nice workout.
  • Sleep – okay this one isn’t new, but it’s something I really need to work on so I’m giving it a second week, actually I’m giving it the whole month but I think I’ll add a different goal next week. I’ve been so much better about it this past week, I’m just hoping to keep it up!

How do you stay motivated towards achieving your goals?

Are you a Bizarre Foods fan? What’s the weird thing you’ve ever eaten? I eat a lot of weird combinations on a regular basis, but nothing that comes close to bull testicles or guinea pigs.

Injuries Suck and a Brain Dump

Being injured is just a big pile of poo. My naggy back-of-the-knee pain will not go away and it is about to drive me crazy. It subsides a lot when I don’t run, but never completely away and when I think I’m safe to run again, BAM post-run it’s back.

injured

Okay, I’m being a little whiny, but I know you fellow runners/exercises/just generally active people feel my pain (pun somewhat intended). It stinks being side-lined by an injury and to be honest I’m not dealing with it too well, and it’s bumming me out a lot.

For one, I really hate sitting still, I mean I can laze around watching Food Network for hours (especially if Paula Deen is on) but there comes I point where I I have to get up and DO something to save my sanity. Two, I’m the worst injured person ever. Luckily I’ve never had any major injuries, but I usually just try to ignore the pain and keep on keepin’ on. Hey, I never claimed to be smart about injury prevention. And lastly I’ve got some big races coming up, races I really need to train for and I can’t, lamelamelame.

Okay, pity party over. Here’s what I’m doing to try to speed up recovery:

  • Ice, lots and lots of it
  • Stretching, trying to get back in the habit of regular yoga because I can tell my hamstrings/calves are tightttt.
  • Anti-Inflammatories, which is a big deal because I’m a hippie and will avoid taking pills for as long as possible. Desperation is sinking in.
  • Low impact exercises, I’ve been a spin class FREAK, I might even resort to the elliptical soon, yuck I hate that thing.

How do you keep your sanity when you’re injured?

Time for a brain dump, AKA all that random thoughts that filter through my head on a daily basis.

  • I hate road closures, I’ve literally ran into 6 different ones since I’ve been home, why you gotta be so difficult to navigate Raleigh?
  • BYOK>BYOL and by BYOK I mean Bring Your Own Kale, that should be a thing, because I totally would.

I mean, I already put it in cupcakes

  • Forget Walgreens, there should be a Trader Joe’s on every corner. Pretty please.
  • Peanut butter fixes everything. I was making a tofu/veggie stir fry and couldn’t find a good asian-y sauce (is that even PC to say?) so I mixed in peanut butter with a little salt and pepper. Problem solved.
  • These need to get in my belly ASAP

  • You can totally judge a fro yo place by how good their chocolate flavor is.
  • 85% cacao, come on Joe, step it up, where’s my 100% at?
  • This afternoon I pulled up the wrong way to the gas pump and 5 different cars of people watched me get back in the car, start it up and turn it around. Sometimes my own intelligence just amazes me.
  • Tomorrow afternoon I will be on the beachhhhh. Well not exactly on the beach because it’s supposed to be in the 40s (ew) but beach adjacent.
  • Thrift Shop is the most relatable hip hop song I’ve heard in a while. I can’t relate to:

But I can relate to shopping at a thrift store, oh so much.

  • Sorry for being horrible with keeping up one comments/reading/all forms of social media, I’ve been enjoying spring break by spending less time on the computer. I miss you guys but I’m enjoying being a little unplugged, I promise I’ll catch back up soon!

How do you deal with an injury?

What’s your brain brain dump for today?

Tuesday Tangents

I think my brain is officially dead. Thank goodness there’s only 3 days until spring break. This girl needs some major sleep.

Enter tangents, because cohesiveness is not happening tonight.

  1. The guy sitting next to me in my 8 AM class was dipping. First off, EWWW! Dipping is pretty much the nastiest habit you could have, it’s a million times worse than smoking in my opinion. Two, 8 AM!? Seriously? Why is it necessary to dip at 8 AM? Three, I’m pretty sure tobacco is banned in all campus buildings, but of course my professor didn’t say anything. I don’t think I’ll be able to look at a Gatorade bottle for a while. Ewewewewew.
  2. My leg still hurts. I’m dying to go for run, hurry up and feel better leg!Photo0918
  3. Only four people came to my Pilates class tonight, but I actually really enjoyed having a smaller class. They were all regulars so I got to work them extra hard and throw in more advanced exercises I don’t usually get to teach. I also accidentally turned on a running playlist instead of my Pilates playlist (hey P’s are right next to R’s!) so we did Pilates to Ke$ha. I didn’t hate it and I think my Thursday class will be getting some Ke$ha as well 🙂
  4. Sometimes I eat really weird things in the name of protein:peanut butter egg whites
Scrambled egg whites with peanut butter, a teeny squirt of honey, cinnamon and vanilla. Sweet scrambled eggs? Why not. My roommates think I’m crazy when I eat things like this.
  5. This article about mindful awareness is pretty awesome. I will definitely be incorporating some of these tips into my life because I’m about as unmindful as it gets at the moment.
  6. I’ve applied for eight internships in the past 2 days, EIGHT! Someone please hire me, I would really like to graduate college.
  7. There are not enough kittens on my Pinterest home page and that needs to change.

    Much better.

  8. Ginger tea is amazing, it seriously clears all my tummy aches right up. And I’m a ginger fanatic so it’s pretty tasty too.
  9. I start a weight training class tomorrow, I’m taking it as a one hour elective because I’m determined to squeeze in at least one elective before I graduate college, crazy schedule or not. And I’m ready to get some muscles. I’m also keeping my eyes peeled for an opening in a Swimming for Non-Swimmers class though because it would also be pretty awesome to learn how to swim before I graduate college.
  10. I’m obsessed with the song Thrift Shop. I know I’m a little late to the party, but I can’t stop listening to it. Seriously, I put it on repeat every morning while I get ready, it pumps me up for the day.
Today I also realized just how sporadic my taste in music is, today my music alternated between Thrift Shop, Jesus music, George Gershwin, Mumford & Sons and Ke$ha. Makes no sense, but I love it.

What are your tangents for today?

What’s a habit other people have that you can’t stand?

What are you listening to lately?

Exciting News and a New Year {MIMM}

Happy New Year’s Eve!

Sorry for not being the most consistent blogger lately, I’ve realized when I’m at home I got into full on lazy mode. It feels good but doesn’t bode so well for my productivity level, or my motivation to blog. But that’s okay, because isn’t the point of winter break to do absolutely nothing for a month? I’m going with yes. Gotta enjoy those school breaks while I still have them! Anyway…

Happy Monday!

(Thanks Katie and  congratulations on your wonderful news!)

First of all, can I just say that every Monday that I’m home on break is automatically marvelous because I have absolutely no obligations and it feels like the weekend. Sorry to rub that in a little more.

Secondly I have some exciting news!

I was recently contact by Tribesports to see if I’d be interested in partnering with their team. Um, YES! If you’ve never heard of Tribesports, it’s basically a social network for sports, fitness and health freaks like yours truly. You can use the website to track workouts, join fitness/health challenges, share advice and recipes and connect with others! I really love the concept of the site and even though I’ve only been a member of the site for the past week or two I’m already loving it!

Tribesports encouraged this

I’ll be sharing some fun workouts and graphics as part of my partnership with Tribesports. For example:

scales

This one I had to share right away because I love it so much. So true right? I used to be so fixated by the number on the scale. I don’t ever weigh myself anymore (seriously it’s probably been almost a year since I’ve stepped on a scale) and I’m so much happier because of it. That’s basically a long way of saying that I really love with this picture (and Tribesports) promotes; I’m so grateful they reached out to me and I’m excited to share more graphics like this with you guys!

Here’s my profile if you’re interested.

Some other things making my Monday marvelous?

Reconnecting with old friends. I met up with an old friend from elementary school on Thursday. She just had an adorable baby girl named Kylie in August and it was so good to see her and her daughter! The last time I saw her was back in June for her baby shower but before then I hadn’t seen her in probably 9 or 10 years! (Whoa, time flies!) I hope to do a better job of keeping in touch this time.

It feels so great to reconnect with old friends, I think that since Facebook and other forms of social media have gotten more popular we’ve become so lazy in staying in touch with old friends. We just check someone’s Facebook/Twitter/Blog to see what they’re up to instead of calling them up and having a real conversation of it. I’m really guilty of that.

Discovering Degrassi Junior High on Amazon.

degrassi junior high

It’s cheesy, Canadian, and fantastically 80’s but I’m obsessed! I’m already over half way through season 2. Judge me if you want for watching a show about middle schoolers but I do not care. I’m a sucker for the headbands and preteen drama.

Hello 80’s fashion. Too bad my family is less than thrilled by it.

Old Navy deals!

I stopped by Old Navy with so Christmas money to take advantage of their post-Christmas sale and walked out with these:

oldnavy

I snagged the sports bra for $6, the shirt (in pink) for $4, the workout capris for $10 (and they’re compression pants!) and the green pants for $17, except that they’re full length in real life and not ankle length like they are on the model. I’ll consider that a win.

I always go shopping with the intention of buying real clothes and some how end up buying workout clothes instead. Whoopsies.

I also had a $20 groupon to a local running outfitter store and picked up a long sleeve Asics top (originally $40). I’m slowly racking up the cold weather running apparel!

Family movie outings. Something crazy happened yesterday where everyone in my family had the day off work and no other obligations so all five of us actually spent sometime together at the same time. It’s sad how infrequently that happens but with school/work/other plans we see each other but not often all at the same time. We all went out to lunch yesterday afternoon at Sweet Tomatoes, and I had my usual obscenely huge salad:

sweetomatoes

You have to go for the double plates. Seriously. I also had some un-pictured chocolate/vanilla swirled frozen yogurt and granola, the best way to end a meal in my opinion.

That night we had plans to go bowling because the local bowling alley was really good deals on Sunday nights, but when we got there the place was packed, it was an 1.5 hour wait for a lane! So we headed to a movie instead. We all compromised on Skyfall (my brothers wanted to see Django Unchained, my dad wanted to see Les Miserables and I wanted to see Monsters, Inc 3D – yes I’m a child, and some how Skyfall was middle ground?). I’m not a big James Bond fan, or action movies in general but Skyfall was actually pretty good. Plus Daniel Craig wasn’t terrible to look at.

daniel craig

I can deal with that for 2 hours.

My New Year’s Eve is going to be a pretty chill one, I’m thinking about running a 5k at midnight, but odds are me running it are starting to look a little slim. I’ve still got about 2 hours to decide (procrastination much?) but home is pretty warm and cozy and race fees are $30, and $10 a mile is starting to sound a little steep. We’ll see what happens! I might just curl up with a glass of wine instead 🙂

What are your New Year’s plans?

Any New Year’s resolutions?

What did you do this weekend?

20 minute Cardio Circuit

20 minute Cardio Circuit

I love this circuit, the smaller number of reps makes this circuit fly by! It’s great if you’ve got a short gym attention span like I do!

Friday Rambles

Guys, I’m seriously slacking on my Pilates posts, sorry about that! I promise to make up for it later. But in the mean time, I’m feeling some rambles, I couldn’t think of a cool alliteration for it so you are just stuck with Friday rambles. Get ready, I have the attention span of a 5 year old, actually they might have me beat.

  • I leave for South Carolina tomorrow! We’re spending the weekend there to have pre-Christmas with my grandfather, aunt and uncle. My boyfriend’s tagging along too because we’ve been dating for 6 years and he still hasn’t met my extended family, I hope he’s in for an all new level of crazy. Just kidding, my family’s not too bad. Sometimes…
    fam2

    circa 2010

Two things about this picture, one, it is physically impossible for my family to take a picture where everyone’s eyes are open, seriously every single picture someone is blinking, two, my family makes me look like a shrimp. I promise I’m actually 5’4″ my family is just a bunch of super tall freaks.

  • I’m very upset at my gut right now for hating gluten. I just want to stuff my face with spritz cookies but nooooooooo. Boo.

    spritz1
You look so tasty yet you are so so mean to my tummy. Gluten-free substitute cookies just aren’t the same. You best believe I’m eating like 50 of these puppies Christmas morning, the day after Christmas is already super depressing so having a terrible stomach ache won’t make it much worse. That sounds a little terrible but it’s my plan.

  • Even though they’re not spritz cookies, I’ve had some pretty good gluten-free cookies lately, first these guys:

    almondcookies
Then I picked up some of these guys at the store:
    gluten free gingerbread cookies
Hit the gingerbread spot. They were light and fluffy, the texture was a little crumbly but I didn’t mind. Only 12 come in a box which is kinda lame, but probably a good thing because if I go crazy and eat the whole box I won’t feel too bad about it.

    And tonight I made these:

    pbblossoms
PEANUT BUTTER BLOSSOMS. I. Love. These. Cookies. Luckily gluten-free peanut butter cookies are super easy to make and all I had to do was add the Hershey’s kiss. Dark chocolate Hershey’s kiss of course.

For the cookie, I used this recipe from the Detoxinista, except I left out the salt because I was using salted peanut butter and I added 1/4 cup almond meal because my batter was looking pretty wet and I was scared it wouldn’t hold up the kiss. I found the Detoxinista’s blog through a google search and she has a ton of grain-free and flourless recipes that I’m super excited to try out soon! I love google blog finds!

  • One box, four cats

    1box4cats
They are all a bunch of crazy kids. Who needs a cat bed when you have an Amazon box?

  • I’ve had some really awesome workouts this week thanks to having no daytime obligations, I love break.
Friday: Yoga, I’m trying not to slack on the yoga since my 30 day yoga streak is over, but I definitely did during exams and my muscles were tightttt, but by the end of class they were all nice and loose-y goose-y
Saturday: Weightlifting, I’ve been feeling a little weak and squishy lately so I’m trying to get more strength training back into my routine, yay muscles!
Sunday: An Interval Training class at the gym, I haven’t been to one of these since the summer and I really enjoyed it! The class is 90/60/30 second intervals of cardio and strength training. I worked hard then went home and ate lots of Christmas cookies. It’s all about balance right?
Monday: Pilates! I love being able to go to classes outside of my University, it gives me lots of good ideas/cues for my classes. This instructor was so good and intense, my abs were feeling it! And I ran a 5k on the treadmill after class.
Tuesday: Another yoga class, I loved this particular teacher, her classes are very flowy and she always gives savasana adjustments which feel amazing!
Wednesday: 5.5 mile run! My longest run since May!
Thursday: 5k run with the running group at my gym and weights. Maybe not the best decision to run back to back days but my legs were feeling good and I don’t get many opportunities to run with other people so I jumped on the chance.
Today!: Yoga and more weights! My legs were tight after all that running!

That was a lot of words and not a lot of pictures, let me make up for that:

  • Lately I’ve been renewing my love for kale:

    kale1
    kale2
I was on a big spinach kick for a while because it’s easier to prepare, but I picked up a bag of kale at Trader Joe’s the other day which was a fantastic decision. I love my greens!

Are you traveling anywhere for Christmas?

What are your weekend plans?

Have you baked any Christmas cookies/goodies? I want details!
