Around the Web

This is going to be quick because I’ve a test and paper due tomorrow (oh, the joys of exam time!). Well, exam time means there’s a good chunk of time spend surfing the web ignoring all the projects I have piling up. Just kidding. A little. I thought I’d share some fun things I’ve found around the internet lately.

Several cat videos are about to happen, just a warning. They are the ultimate productivity suck.

I found my next workout routine for when Best Body Bootcamp wraps up:

True life, I’ve actually tried to bicep curl my cat before. Unfortunately she only weighs 7lbs so it wasn’t much of a workout. Thanks to this video I know realize the key is a cat in each hand. Watch out kitties.

I know this video is all over the place but I seriously die laughing every single time I see it. I don’t think it will ever get old.

I just want to know what cat would actually let you dress them up in a shark costume, because I want one. I think my hands would be shredded if I attempted that my cats.

16 Sasst Tweets from The Nation’s 16th Largest School District – I don’t know if this should make me proud of my former school district, or just worried for education.

9 Myths & Misconceptions about Pilates – I think I’ve heard every single one of these since becoming a Pilates and they’re just not true. Pilates is awesome and I think everyone should do it. I might be a little biased about that 🙂

I’m currently completely obsessed with this song. Like listen to it 10+ a day everyday kind of obsessed, I can’t get enough!

I’m also obsessed with Macklemore‘s album “The Heist”. I bought it before my 10-miler for a little new music to push me through those 10 miles and it’s pretty fantastic.

I also think Macklemore’s face is pretty fantastic. Actually, I think I just like a man in Batman footie pajamas.

Maybe I shouldn’t admit that.

99U by Behance – while their articles are mainly design-focused, they have some really great articles about more general topics like cultivating creativity and business advice. Plus because the website if for designers, the design is beautiful, is it bad that I immediately judge websites based on how pretty they are? I just can’t take a poorly designed website seriously, I just can’t.

62 Gluten Free Dessert Recipes – thanks to Greatist, I am drooling already.

Tina’s adding some exciting new features to the next round of Best Body Bootcamp, which you should definitely check out because it’s an AMAZING program.

Happy Friday

I’m so excited today is Friday. Friday is my favorite day of the week (I’m pretty sure everyone else feels the same!), I only have one short class, the entire afternoon to myself and usually a nice dinner out and general college shenanigans at night. The word shenanigans makes me feel like an old man, but I’m rolling with it.

Tonight we have plans for a Thai dinner (so excited!) and Art Crawl. One of my roommate’s has artwork on display in a couple of galleries and I’m really excited to check them out. And get free wine. Priorities. My roommate has an art blog if you want to check out her work!

I got in a nice sweaty workout this afternoon which felt SO GOOD. I’m the worst injured person ever, I can’t deal with sitting still. I did this LiveFit workout. LiveFit workouts are my go-to for strength training because they work and I always feel like jelly afterwards. I’m weird and I really enjoy that feeling. I also did a 20 minute tabata workout on the exercise bike that looked like this:

tabata bike workout

I was sitting at one of the weight machines secretly hating all the people on treadmills because they were running and I couldn’t. Lack of exercises endorphins clearly makes me a grouch. So I decided to hop on the exercise bike and test out my calf/knee to see how it felt, and it felt pretty good so I pedaled my little heart out for 20 minutes. I was good and kept it to just 20 minutes. Progress people.

In addition to a great workout I also plopped myself in the coffee shop with a big mug of coffee and my laptop and got a ton of work done. Feels good. I eve made some fun social media buttons to the side bar. I’m trying to make things over on the blog slowly but surely.

And for something fun for your afternoon:

Things Group Fitness Instructors Say

Most of these are courtesy of Fit Expo

“Yoga block DOWN!”

“You know, when you’re ellipticizing really hard and the handle just ends up in your mouth!”

“I think I just backed over the yoga block”

“My iPod died because I sweated too hard”

“A day without burpees is like a day without sunshine”

I realize I still owe you guys a recap of Fit Expo, it’s coming! I promise!

Have you ever tried tabata workouts? I love them!

March Resolution

Today’s the last day of February, um, WHAT. Where did the month go? I know it’s the shortest, but still, I think I blinked and missed the whole month.

The end of the month means (paycheck!) oh, and that it’s time for a new monthly resolution, but first, let’s talk about February’s.

resolutions_challenge

For the month of February I made a goal to sketch for 5 minutes everyday and plank everyday. Well that was a big fat fail. Actually I’m being a little dramatic, but January’s Meditation Challenge was much more successful. I think my problem this month was setting two goals. I thought I could get away with two since they were so different (one for the brain, one for the body) and they were relatively small, but I think it got a little overwhelming some days and some days I just straight up forgot.

Overall I was probably around 60/40, so the majority of the time I did what I was supposed to do, which I’m more than happy with. I mean it’s way more than I would have done had I not set the goal for myself. I’ve also gotten back into the habit of sketching/doodling which I really enjoy and is doing wonders for my creativity.

So maybe I wasn’t 100%, but I still feel good about it.

Moving into March, my new goal is 5 minutes of cleaning everyday. I’m not a neat person by nature (my parents will definitely vouch for that one), I’m getting much better about picking up after myself but there are days (especially when school is crazy!) where my room looks like a tornado has torn through it. Whoops. I think taking 5 minutes, everyday will make give me time to pick up whatever I’ve thrown on the floor during the day, without being an overwhelming amount of time. Because after 30 minutes of cleaning I start hating life a little.

Truth.

Are you a neat or messy person?

Do you have any goals you’re working on?

P.S. My giveaway ends tomorrow! Hurry up and enter! I’ll probably end up picking a winner late Friday night. Go win some stuff!

Thankful Thursday & Exciting News!

First and foremost, this Thankful Thursday I am thankful for Thankful Thursday. Seriously. I’ve been feeling really scattered today, okay let’s be real this whole week, so I’m loving that I can just take a second to sit back and be grateful. Plus lists are a scattered-blogger’s best friend, I like that I can just brain dump instead trying to make logical sense right no, because let’s be real, that’s not going to happen. (Thanks Jessie for hosting every week!)

Secondly, I’m veryyyyy thankful for some really exciting news I received yesterday. Remember this?

Well this design is going to be PUBLISHED in a book. A real live book. I’m so excited!

Here’s a better looksies at it. It’s going to be featured in an Appalachian State version of the Artistic Rebuttal Book Project. I’m going to be in a book! Whatttt. I’m especially thankful for this opportunity because I’ve faced a lot of rejection when it comes to my art work, so I get a little overwhelmed when I my work gets accepted for things like this! I hope to make a living off design when I graduate college and achievements like this make me feel like a legit artist.

I’m also thankful for Elf For Health! I’ve been really enjoying the challenges and the opportunity to connect to so many other health and fitness minded people. Tuesday’s challenge was to send a handwritten letter to some one, so my partner and I exchanged letters. I’m not much of a writer so I tried to disguise that by making her a card.

The only problem with homemade cards is that it’s pretty much impossible to find envelopes for them.

And finally I’m thankful for baristas that give you a cup of black coffee that looks like this:

That’s what I’m talking about. Getting my money’s worth. So worth almost spilling it as I sat down.

And this is not related to Thankful Thursday but I’m currently eating a pile of brussels sprouts and it makes me really happy.

Well I am thankful for brussel sprouts because they are very delicious, so I guess that works.

What are you thankful for today?

What’s the last exciting news you got? Share! Let’s be excited together!

Do you like brussel sprouts?

“I Think the Oven’s on Fire”

First things first:

I GOT PEANUT BUTTER! I went a whole 36 hours without peanut butter, I’m glad that’s over. Yes 36 hours without peanut butter is an excruciating long time for me, don’t you judge. My roommate texted me when I was on my way back to the apartment last night telling my my debit card came in, and you can bet I high-tailed it to the grocery store as soon as I got off the bus. I made it to the grocery store 30 minutes before closing and made a bee-line for the peanut butter. Reunited and it feels so good.

Apparently EarthFare has a 5% student discount on Wednesday too, it was fate. I think I’ll be at EarthFare every Wednesday from now on. I’m already planning to hold onto my student ID and using it for discounts until I can’t pass as a student anymore. Since people think I look 15 I’m thinking I have about 10 years of discounts left. You think I’m kidding.

Today I spent 9 hours in front of a computer. Six hours of graphic arts classes + 3 hours of work on design projects for those classes = a very tired pair of eyeballs.

Luckily, I had some yummy snacks to help fuel my designing frenzy. This bar was DELICIOUS, chocolate makes everything better, especially when it’s healthy.

I might have had a teeny kitchen disaster tonight while making dinner…

So I made some of Caitlin‘s Flax-Encrusted Sweet Potato Balls (super easy to make and tasty by the way!) the other night and one fell out of the pan and into the bottom of the oven when I pulled the pan out of the oven. I meant to grab it out of the oven after it cooled down but, um, I forgot to. I turned on the oven to preheat it before roasting some veggies (basically what I’ve been eating for dinner daily as soon as the weather dipped below 85). As I’m chopping some brussel sprouts I look over and see a fire in the oven.

Guess what was on fire. Yep, that little rouge sweet potato ball. My roommate and I managed to put the fire out, after stopping to take a picture first, because that’s a totally normal reaction. We just had a smoky kitchen and luckily the only casualty was one very charred sweet potato ball.

And don’t fret, I still got my veggies roasted. They were delicious, and kind of worth the small fire.

What’s your biggest kitchen disaster? I think a fire takes the cake for me.

Tomorrows Friday! What are your weekend plans?

That’s So Pinteresting…

I’m in a big Pinterest phase right now. I know, me and every other girl in the country. But I go through waves with Pinterest, sometimes I’m obsessed and sometimes, like when I actually have work to get done, I kind of forget about it. But now that summer is here, and I have entirely too much free time, I’m back on a Pinterest kick. Watch out.

Some fun things I’ve found on Pinterest lately (click pictures for source):

I love the long, crazy patterned skirt trend. Unfortunately at 5’4″ I’m not so sure I can pull off a multi-colored floor length skirt. I’ll still lust over them though.

This is Fauja Singh a 100 year old marathoner. There go all my excuses. I think about this picture whenever I want to bail on a run or workout with some lame excuse.

Mountain top yoga is on my bucket list. How amazing of an experience would that be? I need to get my yoga teaching friends to do this with me next year!

I love this idea, I’ve got an old dresser that needs some serious loving. I’m pretty sure it’s as old as I am and it could use a new fun coat of paint. I might have to spruce it up this summer.

I would have a field day. Plain walls are so boring. Give me a paint pen and let me go to town.

We watched a documentary in one of my art classes about Andy Goldsworthy and I’ve been in love with his work ever since. It’s so natural and highlights the beauty of nature. I also love how his art is temporary and meant to be enjoyed in that moment rather than stuck in a gallery forever.

I need this in my life. ASAP. Next paycheck?

Too stinkin cute. Anything with a cat on it is adorable. Maybe that makes me sound like a 5 year old. Do not care.

Coffee and cleverly designed packaging? Yes please. I get ridiculously excited over design things like this. It’s a little (a lot) nerdy but I’m okay with that. And I love coffee. A lot.

That was a weird mishmash of things, oh well.

You can find me on Pinterest here if you’re interested.

Are you addicted to Pinterest? I’ll be impressed if you’re not.

Thursday Thoughts

  • Walking through the grocery store in sweaty biker shorts post-gym sesh is awkward. People stare. Especially when you’re lugging around a gallon of soy milk. Don’t care.
  • I got a comforter for my apartment next year for $9. Thank you Target, I love you.
  • Cats are cute:

But they sure do poop a lot. I spent Wednesday morning volunteering at my local SPCA. The cats were adorable, and friendly, but I cleaned 20 litter boxes by myself. I then considered bathing in a pool of hand sanitizer. But it was for a good cause, so I won’t complain too much, they’re cute little faces make it worth it!
  • I need these in my life:

Wine bottle bow ties. Genius. Who thought wine drinking could get any classier?
  • I hate Jamie Eason, but I really love her. This week’s LiveFit workouts have been killing me in the best way possible.

Single leg deadlifts kill me every time. Julie mentioned them last week. It makes muscles burn that I didn’t even know I had. But they are secretly my favorite exercise of the day, apparently I’m some sort of masochist. I did them on Monday and my legs are STILL sore today. They are no joke.

  • Today marks a month at my internship! I’m still learning lots! I don’t talk about what I do there too often because I had to sign confidentiality agreements and what not, but I’ve gotten to work on a huge variety of projects. When I got the internship I was a little wary, because the business is fairly small, but that turned out to be great because they treat me like a real employee. I’m really enjoying the experience!
  • Speaking of design, I’ve been hard core nerding out on some graphic design podcasts lately. I could listen to people talk about logos, Adobe and business cards for hours. Nerd alert.

The Deeply Graphic Designcast is my current favorite. The cover a huge variety of design topics and they give a lot of great tips and resources for designers. If you’re looking for some design inspiration/resources/tips or if you just need to relish in your inner design nerd, check them out.

  • I’m leaving for Spartanburg, South Carolina for the weekend tomorrow to visit my grandfather. I’m excited to see my grandfather, but there’s no internet there. Help.
  • I’m officially re-addicted to yoga, I can’t get enough. More on that tomorrow.

Well I’m off to bed, have a good night!

Listen to any good podcasts lately?
I’m on a serious podcast kick at the moment, and I’m open to suggestions if anyone has one they love! Any and all topics are welcome.

Lately.

Hey, it’s been a while! I’ve been feeling a little under the weather so I kept things pretty low key this weekend. Here’s what I’ve been up to lately.

  • Crafts:
I’ve been crafting up a storm lately. My mom and I painted the door to the playhouse/shed in our back yard because it was looking a little weathered a rough. Pretty much whatever we did to it it couldn’t look worse than it already did. Before:
    Image

    After:
ImageI’m also working on crocheting a baby blanket for a friend’s baby shower. We went to elementary school together and I haven’t seen her in forever!
ImageNot close to being done yet, but I’m making progress. I really like making gifts for people whenever I can, it just feels more personal. So if you have a summer birthday you might get a crocheted scarf when it’s 95 degrees out, sorry.
  • Sick:
Blah I hate being sick. I pretty much feel like I have mono, except that I’ve already had it. The lymph nodes in my neck are swollen and sore and fatigue. Sunday I had a headache and body aches on top of that. Not fun. Also stay away from WebMD when you’re sick. I convinced myself for about half an hour that I had West Nile. I called the doctor Monday night to make sure my symptoms weren’t anything bad, she recommended I take Aleve and get some rest. Neither of those sound very fun. I hate painkillers and I don’t like sitting still, but I’m being good and doing both. I’m less swollen today, so I guess it’s working.
  • Workouts:
I’ve been trying to stay active because exercise endorphins always make me feel better. Saturday I went for a 2.5 mile run. It was torture. It’s a poor, poor choice to go running outside when it’s 85 degrees and humid. So much sweat. I was going for 3 miles but I just couldn’t do it. I’ll have to start running early mornings (or on the treadmill – ew) if I want to keep my mileage up.
Sunday I slept. My workout was getting up to walk to the kitchen to make food. And an hour power nap. I never take naps, I’m a weirdo and I don’t like them, but there’s nothing like them when you’re sick.
Monday I did day 1 of Jamie Eason’s LiveFit Trainer. I’m thinking about starting the 12 week program, and I really liked the workout. I’ve been wanting to focus more on strength training and I think it would be helpful
Today I went to a yoga class. It was amazing. I’ve been neglecting my yoga practice it felt so good to do it again. I need to be better about it. My next payday I’m going to try to find some classes to take at a local studio, which I’m very excited about.
  • Finds:
Here’s some fun things I ran into this weekend:ImageYes that’s “Don’t be a Chicken Shit Hot Sauce”. I love that name. Saturday night my family went out to Tijuana Flats. I love Tijuana Flats because their salads are bigger than my head, and they have a hot sauce bar. What more could I ask for in a restaurant? Their hot sauces also have the BEST names. See above example. Another favorite is “Smack My Ass and Call Me Sally”. I might have gotten 5 different types of hot sauce for my meal. Let’s ignore the fact that I ordered a salad.

ImageThis is nerdy, but my mom and I were at Lowe’s the other day picking out paint colors for the door we were painting and I saw this display. Paint colors based on Pantone inks? Whattttt! The designer in me was way too excited about it.

Long Day.

I’ve spent a good 6 hours in front of the computer today. Good grief! That sounds so much worse when I write it out. My eyeballs feel like they’re going to fall out. I applied for a summer internship a couple weeks ago and they want me to send them some portfolio pieces, so I’ve been working on perfecting them. Fingers crossed I get it! Got some serious school work done too, I’m just trying to plow through all my assignments before spring break in two weeks!

I got my butt out of bed in time for an 8 am yoga class this morning. I felt like amazingness during class, but afterwards my body felt like it had been hit by a truck. Does that happen to anyone else? I felt a lot better after lunch and I can tell I’ve been holding a lot of tension in my body lately. I’ve been neglecting yoga lately (though not by choice, I miss it!), so maybe that explains it. And running has been making my muscles so tight! I miss the noodle I used to be when I was dancing hardcore in high school, I need to get that back! I”m thinking a hot date with my foam roller tomorrow night is just what I need, woo! woo!

I’ve got to admit I could never be a straight up food blogger. I’m an eating machine. I get straight up hangry every 2-3 hours. Not just hungry. Hangry. I’m not a pleasant person with an empty tummy. So what I’m basically saying is that I eat a really delicious meal and then on the final bite I’m like “oh, this was delicious, I should have taken a picture of it”. Sorry guys, I’m forgetful when I’m hungry. I did remember get a picture of my dinner only halfway through eating it, that’s close right?

Image

Salad a la Dining Hall with lettuce, carrots, red onions, tomatoes, olives and hummus (the best salad topper, just saying). Just double what you see there and add 2 hard boiled eggs and a stonyfield yogurt with some granola on the side. It hit the spot, I love me vegetables. And for lunch I had a salad with kale, sweet potatoes and tofu, very yummy but devoured within minutes, so no picture. Oops, what can I say? My 10 am Photoshop class sure works up an appetite. Seriously, I’m a starvin’ Marvin when I leave that class, but that’s probably just because it’s close to lunch.

I’ve got a 3 mile run planned for the morning, it might be my last one before my 8k on Saturday! I haven’t decided if I’m going to try to squeeze in a short 2 mile-ish run on Thursday of Friday or not, but knowing me it probably won’t happen. Which is good I want some fresh legs to run on this weekend!

Goodnight!
